Kenwood TK3207 + Autocom - help!

As my pal has Autocom already fitted to his recent purchase, I thought I may as well get one too. I started by buying the radios, following the description in the ad, I chose the TK3207. They appear to be the genuine thing.
Then I talked to Autocom, who said this model radio has a high output and will fry the Autocom units. Allegedly, there is software, which via a lead from the computer, will reduce the output. I have had no luck in locating any assistance with recalibrating the radios.
Is there anyone out there that can help? I have no radio knowledge, computers are mysterious humming things.
Can I use these radios, or have a pair of lemons?
