just got back from a week in france.had the oil changed before i went and put in bmw own brand 20/50.remembered to take the obligatory spare litre bottle, which after 1,800 miles i have brought back unopened.the bike did not use one drop of oil.being fairly new to boxer engines and reading all the oil threads on here i must admit to having thought the bike would use vast amounts of oil but with mine anyway it is not the case.the bike was fantastic, never missed a beat.

I think it depends on the individual bike. I bought mine new in 2004 and it uses no oil at all, even with fully synthetic 5W40 in it since the 6000 mile service it still uses none.
It could also be that bikes know when they are in France and don't use oil here

I just returned from a 3500mile round trip from the west of Scotland through the Alps to Monaco and back. I used a litre and a half of oil. It was 10/40w semi synth. Have read some of the posts it should probably have been 20/50. the bike is a 1999 1100s and has only just turned 9000miles. It was not helped that the brother wrote off his bike on the first day in France and then I was 2 up for the rest of the journey. Two big guys and kit, we reckoned on a rolling 60stone. Testament to the bikes ability.

All joking aside, my 60K 1100s always used plenty of oil
except when in France. Why?
None of that stop-start-stop-start ball ache you have to put up with in the SE of England!
I could feel my bike positively depressed the moment we hit the M20 on the way back.
