A word of caution when ordering a new tax online from the DVLA.....
if your bike has been SORN, do not apply for a new tax until the first day of the new month;
unlike the great idea of allowing you to apply 2 days before expiry in Post Offices and Vehicle licencing centres, the online system is set up to always back date the tax to the begining of the current month. So if you apply on the 31st for a new tax disc (common sense would suggest it'd be the coming month!) it will be back dated.
This has happened to me personally, and I see it as blatant theft. I complained to the DVLA but they replied with a 'hard luck' letter!
Bailey.

The DVLA have become just another Labour Government revenue generation agency in recent years
. It all started with the personalised plates racket, and they make an absolute fortune selling our details to 3rd parties without our knowledge.
I got stung for a £110 fine last month (reduced to £40 on appeal). I part-exed my V70 against a newer model, and naively accepted the car dealership's offer to send the logbook off to the DVLA on my behalf to tell them that I was no longer the keeper of the old car. Due to administrative incompetence they failed to do so and I got shafted (because ultimately it was my responsibilty to send the slip off to the DVLA).
Fortunately he swallowed the £40 fine, but another cautionary tale...
