Should I sell my TL1000S?

I've had it for over 8 years now and have become rather attached to it, but now I've got my R1200S I can't see it getting much use. It's totally mint but probably only worth about £2K so I was thinking of sticking it in the shed and storing it for now. I could then dust it off in 10 years time and reminisce

. A bit of a waste though. Thoughts?

I'd be tempted to hang onto it - it's already a relatively rare bike and can only appreciate in value from here. I've been on the lookout for a mint / unmolested blue & white TL1000R for some time now and they're like hen's teeth. The SV 1000 never really filled the gap left by the TL and there's a distinct lack of decent V-twin sportsbikes available from the big Jap manufacturers these days (possibly due to increasingly difficult-to-meet emissions targets). A future classic I reckon

Very much what GB said.
Although I reckon it'd be worth buying a 1000 V-Strom and bunging the TLS's motor into it. Add some 17" wheels and go have fun

If I store it, what do I need to do to it? You use to have to drain the float bowls with carbs, is there anything that should be done with FI?

You can get some fuel additive (can't remember what it's called - sorry) that stops it going gummy and clogging up the injectors. There are two schools of thought regarding fuel - either fill it to the brim to prevent condensation or run it as low as possible so that when you come to run it after storage you can dilute the stale fuel with a gallon or two of fresh. I went for the latter option on my S.
Clean the bike thoroughly and coat in FS365 (moisture gets everywhere), put fresh oil in the engine before you store it (old oil can damage bearings if left for a long time), lift both ends of the bike so the tyres are off the ground, put the battery on an Optimate, cover it with something that won't scratch and won't cause/trap condensation.....
...I think that's about it.
Oh, when you pull it out of storage give it a thorough service before using it.

I'm in the other camp on this one
If you're not going to use it, then let someone else get some use out of it. ie sell it.
I hate to see a decent machine unused.....it's such a waste!

Why not keep it and try to use it now and again ? It would be a nice
contast to the R12 I'd imagine ?
I always thought the TL's were a nice bike myself.

Thanks for tips, Sproggy. Before I put it away for the winter I changed the oil, took the battery out and gave it a once over with a PTFE spray. If I decide to keep it I'll get some of that fuel additive you mentioned.

Hi Paul
I would check out
TLzone.net for the answers.
I'd be tempted to keep her if you have storage otherwise let someone else enjoy the benefit. I love mine but because of lack of a garage I might sell my TL and S next year and make do with just a R1200S

.
I'm just about ready to put my TLS back on the road after fitting uprated Hayabusa forks / Ohlins / New Spring on a Stick / Thermosat mod / airbox mod / braided hoses / 6 pot calipers / PCII. I lost interest half way through due to it being too dark / cold / wet but have regained my wrenching mojo.

Hi Julian,
I will be interested to see what you think of your mods. What is the airbox mod by the way? I've done the thermostat, fork springs and braided hoses. I found the biggest improvement to the brakes was fitting a slightly larger master cylinder. Have you changed the steering damper?

I fitted a 5/8 Hayabusa Master Cylinder. The
airbox modis basically cutting out the flapper valve, fibre glassing the hole and blocking the vacuum tube.
I'd like to get a decent steering damper but will just change the oil to 5wt for the time being. Lighter wheels would be nice too.
Cheers

No don't sell it but send it up to me where I will, from the goodness of my heart, store it for you for free, and even occasionally give it a run out to keep it healthy. Only thing you'll need to pay for is tyres and I can't see me using more than 2 sets a season.
Won't even charge you for the 'lecy on the trickle charger. Must admit really like the looks of the TL, and that engine..........oh mother.
As has been said Fuel stabiliser wheels off ground and in a reasonable stable environment with a cover that won't cause condensation.
reckon my idea's better though . . . . . .

The engine is a beast. Just when you think that the engine is about to hit the limiter there is another 2k revs available, a top end powerband and the front comes up. It soooooo smooth compared to the boxer engine.
