I've just been out in the garage trying to attach a tailpack to my R1200S but there is nowhere to fix the bungees to. I've popped out the 4 'hooks' from under the pillion seat but they're not really in the right place. How is everyone else getting on?

For the Wales trip I'll probably get away with a cargo net but I'm intending on taking it down to Garmisch in July so will have to work out a better solution. It's looking like I'll have to shell out for the BMW hard panniers.

Paul you have to go the Ventura Luggage system way, excellent bit of kit.

Just drop the Panniers (instant touring mode) on and away you go!!! Remove at destination and your back on the 'sport''sport''sport' bike.

As I already have a full wingrack kit for my XJR1300 I am none too keen to blow another £215 on a Ventura rack and bag - as beautiful as they are.
Since I only do one-up motoring I can afford to forgo the seat on the 1200s and already have the seat cover anyway - leaving me with a spare seat pad that in all likelyhood will never be used.

This weekend I intend to butcher the seat pad and connect a SW-Motech alurack adapter plate to it - using spacers and a load spreading plate underneath. That way I can mount my 52 litre maxia box to it.

If anyone has tried this and failed - please shout up. Otherwise, necessity being the mother of invention, I shall procede with drill and knife on Saturday morning...

BMW tankbag and tailpack.

The tailpack straps to some fittings whicj I have tied to the subframe so it can be used with seat ir cowl, the straps then tuck out of the way when not is use. Ideally I'd like ti further back so I can swing my leg over easier, but it'll do for what little touring I have planned - i.e long weeksnds etc.

The tankbag is excellent, and those who have one will confirm, it does look big but doesn't get in the way at all for normal 'touring' although it can get in the way of a more sporty position. In all honesty when you're on the move you forget either of them are there....you just have to make you remeber the tailpack is there before you dismount

Hi,instead of ruining your pillion seat why not either buy a seat rack from a place called Hattech in Germany or make a copy for yourself.Ive just made one similar to theirs and it cost less than £50.It has been made to take a 52 litre givi box.I'll add some pics when i work out how to do it.

Yeah - I saw the Hattech unit - but I make it a policy to avoid any company that advertise their product on the net in loads of detail but then ask you to call them to discuss the price. Screw 'em. That's no way to do business.

I'm not bothered about butchering the seat since I am unlikely to use it ever again - I have another bike if I want to take pillions.
Looking at the seat unit mountings looks like a lot of work to make one so it just seamed a simpler solution to use the seat itself as a template. I'm in no rush until the end of June so will wait to see your pics first I think - might give me some better ideas.

Pan Ears is what I say, Reckon that there will be a market for S/H kit here if you sell the bike at some point in the future.I have sold panniers for the 1100s very quickly (at a realistic price)in the small ads on this site in the past.

I have some throwovers already. Used 'em once. Hit a bus while feeding through traffic on the M3 on the way to Portsmouth docks. Red faces all round.

Don't like using throw-overs now.

£188 for the Hattech unit. That is utterly mad.
For £215 you can get the Ventura kit including the luggage to go with it.

I think my idea of butchering the original seat is going to be fine - I bet a replacement seat isn't £188.
