Had a nice ride today to a friend who lives at the other side of the country (yeah, the country isn't that big). At the end of the day, I decide to take the highway home as it was getting late and I still had a few hundred to do.

At some point, I have to exit one highway, and get on another. It is a two lane offramp and I am riding on the left lane as the right one is congested not moving much. As I am plodding along, a car decides to pull in front of me as he figured out the other lane is faster too. I hit the brakes. No good, not gonna make it. I see visions of crashing my pretty bc prep in the back of that car and decide to execute evasive maneuvres. Not gonna make it. A huge bang follows. I am still riding. Another huge bang. My hand hurts. I am still riding. WTF? I AM STILL RIDING! I get into the emergency lane and park my car. A little shaken up, I walk around my bike and see no damage. WTF? Check again. I see some scrapes over the right hand rocker cover. Hmmz. Is that it?

By now, the car pulled up in the emergency lane too and the come check if I am ok. I am. My hand hurts some. They ask what happened, as they didn't see anything and only heard the bangs. I explain they pulled directly in front of me and basically drove right into me. We check the car. In front of the rear wheel, there is a scraped dent about 10" long, 4" tall and about 1" deep. Nice profile of a BMW boxer engine. Their left hand mirror is gone. Guess that explains the pain in my hand.

We fill out the paperwork and we're on our way. I feel one lucky SOB today. For one, by not crashing after being hit by a car and second for riding a boxer. Had I been on a normal bike, sure my knee would have taken the impact right cylinder now took. Judging by the dent in the car, that would probably have completely destroyed my knee.

I am home. I am ok. Bike is ok. Life is good.

Thank you BMW.

Lucky escape! Phew! I remember a similar story of one of the other members on this board. We should claim a discount on the insurance... BMW's own SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) for motorcycles :)
