Oil Filter - 2 Rubber Seals ?

Post by JoeC »

Just changing my engine oil along with the BMW branded oil filter (not changed the filter before) and there appears to be two rubber sealing rings where the filter has come out. One is in the filter itself and the other loose and it fell out. Should there be two?
The loose rubber ring is chamfered so if I do need to reinstall it then does the thin part go up into the engine first or the other way round.
Haynes manual says nothing about 2 rings.
FYI - I am going to fit a K&N oil filter.

Joe - sounds like the person before didn't recover the previous ring to me. Sometimes when you take the filter off, the rubber ring stays stuck up in the hole, stuck to the mating surface due to the suction of the oil all over it. I've had to fish around with a screwdriver to recover it before. You CAN fit a new filter with the old seal in place, but it feels weird when you're screwing it on, which is how I came to discover the old seal was still up the hole.

Anyway, as far as I know there is only one seal, but others might put me right

Correct - only one seal. Having two seals (one old one, one new) vastly increases the risk of leaks.
