Clutchless shifting

I have been practising clutchless shifting and am getting quite good at it, but I was wondering if doing a clumsy shift will damage clutch or gearbox? Any answers , should I stop doing it?

I find on the 1200Adv that clutchless upshifts are not as smooth as pulling the clutch lever about an inch
Same goes for the BCR.
But.......... the Yam and the Daytona snicked into the next gear beatifully
Don't do it on downshifts, though

I suppose it depends if it's up or down pasty,up is a no no but down is ok up to a point buit don't make a habit of it as it won't do your gearbox any good in the long term, why do you want to do it in the first place??

I'd say around 75% of my upshifts are clutchless, but never on the downshift.

Clutchless downshifts will tend to lock the whel and if the road is a bit slippy......................... Ooops!
I read that you should apply a bit of pressure to the shift, close the throttle slightly, and as you do that - apply a bit more pressure to the selector to snick into the next gear and get back on the throttle.

Up shifts should be fine, back off the throttle and up it goes. Down shifts not a good idea unless you are very good at matching revs.
Used to do it on trackdays with the R6. The only reason I can see to do it on the road is for those 'mugello' moments - tucked in behind screen... throttle pinned..... click, vroom, click, vroom, kerrrrunch, click, click.... needle bounces off rev limiter

Clutchless upshifts should be fine, its just a case of getting your foot to learn the pace of the engine (different bikes have different needs).
Downchanges should always be with clutch, as without puts enormous strain on the gear dogs and in a direction the gear dogs are not designed to stand. Furthermore the engine speed to road speed differential increases on downchanges, whereas it decreases on upchanges.
Also the offset of gear dogs is designed to favour upshifting.
The only bikes designed for clutchless downshifts are motocross / enduro / and trials bikes.
Downchanging on a road bike without the clutch can result in sheared dogs and gearbox seizure, which can be right scary!

I must apologise pastyman,i used to do only a few down the box shifts on my early jap bikes but would never do them on the beemer,i can't see the point in it myself, apart from that i wouldn't want you to end up at the side of the road with a knackered gearbox!
