Can I have my old bike back?

Post by ianc53 »

1200GS, 450 miles (yes 450  ); rear wheel, brake, tyre covered in oil as final drive seal appears to have given up the ghost  . I was at home after a 150 mile run yesterday when I discovered it but looking back suspect it's been weeping slightly since I got it.

It's just been carted off to John Clarks. Have to say BMW Assistance were pretty good. Technician called me and after my 'frank' description of the problem decided he didn't need to attend but just organised pickup.

I'll be at JC's tomorrow to see what they are going to do  .

Cheers

Hello Ian

Sorry to hear of your misfortune...

Hope this hasn't put you off GS ownership.
Perhaps you should have bought the Superior Predecessor to the 1200

Keep us posted on the prognosis

Regards

By all accounts the bevel drive, seals, bearings etc are a very common fault on all the new boxers.
From what I've heard they just change the complete unit rather than try to fix!!
Hope you get it sorted soon.

Ian, sorry to hear about the misfortune.

I hope you have better luck with J.C Tayside then I did with J.C Grampian (ref entry June 06); an absolute shite of a company to deal with. I had to seek legal advice before the buggers reduced a 30k service cost from almost £700 to a figure which I am still fuming about.

Make sure you get all the quotes and agreements on paper. Having said that, I do beleave they are a better bunch of guys in Dundee then in Aberdeen.

I vowed last year to never darken their door again; I would rather drive to Glasgow, Edinburgh or Inverness for my next service, then give those buggers another penny of my money.

Anyhow, thanks for the hugger and I hope all works out OK.

Cheers for nooo,

Leasky

Don't know about sealed for life as JC's have sent to Germany for a tool to repair it (big hammer :?: ). Maybe they were telling the truth when they said it was the first failure they personally had had, altho. they knew it was a problem. It hadn't lost too much oil when they measured what was left. Should have it back Wednesday or Thursday (ever the optimist  ).

My own experience of JC's in Dundee has been OK, done what I've asked and the cost has been pretty much what I expected - by BMW standards. The blokes in spares have actually been quite helpful. Having said that I know other people who have been very unhappy with the sales 'executives'.

To be continued.

Cheers

JC's had the bike fixed by Tuesday but I didn't get in till yesterday to pick it up. They replaced the seal and brake pads so we'll see how it goes.

Was that your 1200S in there? Akra exhaust and carbon belly pan, looked very nice.

Cheers

I wish I could say that it was. That does sound nice.
Unfortunately, my wife has a long standing veto on aftermarket exhausts.

Probably is, they just don't live very long

Fortunately mine's still OK after 9k miles, although I now feel inclined to go and check it.
