1200GS, 450 miles (yes 450 ); rear wheel, brake, tyre covered in oil as final drive seal appears to have given up the ghost . I was at home after a 150 mile run yesterday when I discovered it but looking back suspect it's been weeping slightly since I got it.
It's just been carted off to John Clarks. Have to say BMW Assistance were pretty good. Technician called me and after my 'frank' description of the problem decided he didn't need to attend but just organised pickup.
I'll be at JC's tomorrow to see what they are going to do .

By all accounts the bevel drive, seals, bearings etc are a very common fault on all the new boxers.
From what I've heard they just change the complete unit rather than try to fix!!

I hope you have better luck with J.C Tayside then I did with J.C Grampian (ref entry June 06); an absolute shite of a company to deal with. I had to seek legal advice before the buggers reduced a 30k service cost from almost £700 to a figure which I am still fuming about.
Make sure you get all the quotes and agreements on paper. Having said that, I do beleave they are a better bunch of guys in Dundee then in Aberdeen.
I vowed last year to never darken their door again; I would rather drive to Glasgow, Edinburgh or Inverness for my next service, then give those buggers another penny of my money.

I heard somewhere the rear drive unit is supposed to be "Sealed for life".
Don't know about sealed for life as JC's have sent to Germany for a tool to repair it (big hammer ). Maybe they were telling the truth when they said it was the first failure they personally had had, altho. they knew it was a problem. It hadn't lost too much oil when they measured what was left. Should have it back Wednesday or Thursday (ever the optimist ).
My own experience of JC's in Dundee has been OK, done what I've asked and the cost has been pretty much what I expected - by BMW standards. The blokes in spares have actually been quite helpful. Having said that I know other people who have been very unhappy with the sales 'executives'.
