Biggest miles in one day?

Post by Boxered »

following on from the berlin thread in days out, I thought I'd start a new thread, just for fun, what is your biggest mileage in one day, and what bike did you do it on.
I think Jason will be the outright winner :) but we'll see

I'll start with my meagre offering:

750miles from Argeles plage in france near the border with spain, to calais.
we set off at 9.30 am and arrived at calais 7.30pm. I had planned to split the journey with an overnight stop as my ferry was booked for the following day, but my trusty kwack zx10 (1992) just entered warp speed, and we where there before we knew it.

750 miles approx in 24hr doing the National Rally in 1999. No big deal but I think I deserve a bravery award for doing on a Ducati 750ss.

Steve mate - I was talking to someone about this the other day as he wanted to enter the Iron Butt rally. I think you have to do quite a few of their awards etc to qualify though. I think high mileages are a LOT easier in the states where the interstates have lots of fuel, no aminals and fast free flowing traffic. Light and weather makes a big difference in my experience too. Long warm summer days are obviously best. These courier boys are the real high mileage kings though. One long day and you can relax and sleep after, but string a few together and you're buggered big styley. There is absolutley NO WAY I could do that Iron Butt rally - 11k in 11 consecutive days is serious hard core stuff

I can't remember exactly but I think my highest single day (well.. continuous ride anyway) is just over 1300 gps miles, I once did over 2k in two days in Australia, and 5k in a week in the states, both on the 1100S. It's not big and it's not clever though

Porto to Madrid 2 up - about 400 miles I think, small beer compared with the hardcore...

Went from 27 degree spring day to snow... wasn't much fun once we got on the motorway...

I always try to break the journey up as big miles on an S is no fun, even less two up, on the motorway, in snow....

I take no pleasure from fighting cold/sleep/traffic/numb legs/arse etc. on long motorway journeys - London to Leeds is the grimmest ride I can think of off hand..

Going somewhere interesting though - thats a different thing alltogether..

Not a one day mileage but the up north tour of '05 was the one many will remember where I did just under 1k miles in three days on a KTM 640LC4. Certainly felt like I had an Iron Butt after that.

Approx 750 miles from Frankfurt to Birkenhead on a Yamaha SRX 600 single. I thought if I ever do it again it would be on a not yet invented R1100S.

Did a 980 miler on an FJ1200 is the mideighties,Breda in Holland to a little village called Sospel just north of Menton,it nearly bloody killed me.

A 1050 miler from Barcelona to B'ham in 05, on the Tiger i've got now, that was completely the opposite it was a doddle.

Both pale into insignificance in comparison to my first every trip abroad on a bike in 1973 on 750 Kawasaki triple, travelling from Le-Havre to a small town called Figeac in cental southern France 550 mile of pure murder, put 5 liters of oil in the gearbox cuz the outside crank seal had gone, and the e'rm passenger on the back had to buy a cushion to sit on as the seat was so bad.

As jason has already said, doing a big mileage day is no big deal, getting up and doing another the following day is the trick!!!

Only 400 miles for me on the S to Lincoln and back in a day - but I've still got a few years ahead of me to better that. :)
