New bike or old bike???? RANT

Apparently even though I bought my bike second hand and it is over a year and a half old, because it hasnt yet done 6000Km (under its own power), HM Customs and excise consider it to be a "New means of Transport". This means that when I bring it back to the UK with me they want to charge me VAT ON THE NEW PURCHASE PRICE OF THE BIKE!!!! and since its no longer in production, THEY WILL DECIDE WHAT IT IS.

I know there is a really simple answer to this which is to put some miles (KM) on it beforehand but it really is really p***ing me off. Particularly since if you read the rules, to qualify as a "New means of transport" the vehicle must be registered in the UK within a maximum of 1 month of purchase and have only delivery mileage on it. So clearly my bike is not new by their rules except that they want to charge VAT as if it is new??????????????????

Looks like you may have a new member at your April meet, that should put the required 3000Km on it!!!!

Haveing also suffered at the hands of HM Customs when i bought an XT from a guy in Guernsey,you have my sympathy,what i found strange,when you actually bring the bike over,you deal with the ferry operator,as though the customs don't want to get their collective hands dirty dealing with joe public.
