Blowing silencer

Post by cc mac »

Hi folks, yesterday I noticed my exhaust had gotten louder so I looked underneath and found that the silencer was leaking at the point where the main pipe connects with the silencer. I have now removed the (standard) silencer and found that the pipe moves about a bit. Is it worth getting it welded? is it supposed to be loose? or should I just look around for another standard can? I don't want anything louder than that or mess around with chips etc. A cheap solution is needed here. Cheers.

Noisy Exhaust

Post by Taz »

Halfords sell some very good exhaust paste for about £3.50. I tried the small red tube when I was fitting a new exhasut just to make sure that the joints were leak free and it seemed to work. It goes on like toothpaste and then hardens with the heat of the exhaust.

So when is this 'Old enough to know better' supposed to kick in?

I'm not quite clear on the problem. Does the link-pipe from the cat to the silencer box seem a loose fit? If so then you might be missing an OEM gasket. It may be possible to tweak the female connector a bit tighter (ooh err)?

If your pipe has a split in it at a joint (on the silencer side?) then I would try and find an OEM silencer 2nd hand if I were you. They are hard to give away (about £15 on eBay and loads of people on here have one or two in the garage) so it shouldn't be hard.

On my bikes I try and steer away from "gun gum" and the like - it always feels like too much of a bodge (same mental category as plastic metal and liquid gasket I'm afraid, yukky).

CC, I have a std pair in the garage that I'm keeping in case I ever sell my beloved, but you are welcome to borrow them until you find a permanent pair, they do come up regularly on ebay. I work in Liverpool, so if you want to borrow them just let me know and I'll bring them in for you to collect.

Hi
I bet the weld that holds the conecting pipe into the cans has failed.Mine did the same thing once after coming loose in france.I had them welded up by a mate.

Thanks for the offer Steve. I might yet take you up on your offer. It is the weld where the pipe joins the silencer. At present it looks like second hand might be the best option for the price of a weld.
