I know about induct solutions to enable the boxer to breathe more easily - but why don't people just drill the airbox lid / the area above the filter? On my old Bros, there were even people running no airbox lid at all. As it's not a pressurised airbox as such, surely this, in combination with a foam / K&N filter would improve the induction side of things??
I assume it's been tried?

Yes and yes it does. I ran mine without the intake and filter housing for over 100 K miles with a K&N. It does make a healthy difference and costs nothing.
Also no mods are necessary so you can easily change it back if you feel no difference.

It's not all roses.....
Removing the intake, particularly with a SJ/K&N fitted, produces A LOT of induction noise. I tried this, rode the bike once and then put the (standard) intake back on. I have a not-too-quiet pipe but that's behind me - the intake is right underneath my head and I found the noise intrusive even with ear plugs in. Couldn't hear the pipe over the induction noise.
It's a free and fully-reversible mod so by all means try it but don't assume it's necessarily an easy one to live with. Nothing's entirely free
