Sorry for yet another oil related question but I recently bought some car engine oil 10w30 at trade price intending to use it during the winter instead of 10w40. However, now I am not too sure and want to double check in case I damage the engine. I use the bike for 26 mile round trip to work going down fast A road and town (Kent to London).

I probably won't use the bike throughout all of the winter as I will use my Fazer 600 for most of that.

I would use it over the UK winter and change it again in the spring. I could not use a **W30 at all in my bike as I would get too much vibration in the heat down here and so I use a **W50. When I have got more miles on it I will go to a 5W40 the same as my wifes bike.

The owner's manual includes a clear chart indicating which grade of oil to use in which ambient temperature range. Unless you ride at temps below minus 10 I believe from memory that 10W40 is fine. I'd never go as low as a 30 weight oil - if it's too cold for 10W40 it's too cold to ride full stop. And yes, I do ride all year round unless there's snow on the roads.
