How Long To Simmer For ?

This is my first winter with the R and am not too sure how long to leave it to idle in these cold mornings. Currently I start it up just as I put my gloves on and leave it on the half choke position, in reality it is probably running for about 1 minute. I run it on this half choke for about 300 metres or until it runs OK.
Any suggestions and experieces would be greatfully received.

I just start mine and ride it like it says in the manual. Be a bit sympathetic with the revs for the first few miles.
If you search on the Pelican and /or ADVRider you will see storys and pictures of boxers that have caught fire through PROLONGED idling. I believe that the US bikes have a warning sticker stating that idling is not permitted due ot fire risk.

The length of time that you should leave it to idle is exactly zero. The engine will warm up quicker under load and these days nearly every manufacturer of cars and bikes, say don't leave it on idle to warm up.

I start mine before putting my gloves on, giving her just enough time to let the oil circulate (15 seconds or there abouts) then ride off, knocking the idle up off when I pull away.
This doesn't actually change depending on the time of year as she seems to run the same.
I never know the best way to start her when semi-warm though! With the position of the starter switch a little bit of throttle isn't easy but it seems silly using the idle up.

If your oil takes 15 seconds to circulate after startup I'd start saving for a new engine......

1. Put togs on (inc gloves)
2. Sit on bike, lifting it from its sidestand
3. Turn key, hit starter
4. Flick up s/stand
5. Blip throttle very gently
6. Put into gear
7. Ride away gently
I thangwe.

Wll I've no idea how long it takes...but that's what I deem to be "enough" for a warm up before riding away.

As has been said , just start and go, taking it easy for the first mile or two. The choke as you call it is not actually a choke but a fast idle lever connected to the throttle cable junction box.

Right................that explains something:
1) Put togs on
2) sit on bike (no centre stand)
3) Turn key, hit starter
4) Put into gear
5) Flick up side stand
6) Re-start engine
7) Put into gear (again)
Ride off (hoping neighbours aren't watching)

I forgot point 8...
After 3 or 4 miles of taking gently...

Hmm,
Start bike, no sitting around waiting, but gentle pootle down to A24 (half a mile max), RB whizz's past, rag the bollocks off it to catch up for a spirited ride into London, not once breaking a speed limit.
