Hello all,
I appreciate your probably sick of answering similar questions but I can't find what i'm looking for under faq. I'm looking to buy an r1100s. What are the main things I should look out for? and what generally goes wrong?

1. Finish can be pretty poor - engine case paint/paint on the forks falls off
2. Discs have been known to warp (they don't have separate carriers and bolt directly to the wheel)
3. Gearbox/engine oil seals can fail - slipping clutch when warm
4. Paralever bearings can fail at 20000+ miles. Not difficult to replace but a faff all the same
5. Leaking bevel box seals - check for oil weeping from the rear rubber gaiter on drive shaft.
6. Engine itself is pretty much bulletproof.
Not the rosiest of pictures perhaps, but on the whole the S is a very reliable bike. Plenty of guys on here with high mileage (70k+)

BMW claim 98 bhp for them, Bike magazine seems to hava their own figure, not just for BMWs, but for all bikes.

That'll be power measured at the back wheel on a dyno - the magazine tests don't correct for transmission losses so they always come out significantly lower than manufacturers claims and are probably more realistic. The quoted 98bhp will have been measured on an engine dyno by the manufacturer with all kinds of 'optimisations' (e.g. no gearbox!).johnl wrote:Its just my old review of the 1100s in BIKE magazine stated they had 78bhp.

Don't worry - big numbers aren't everything and different dynos can vary wildly. If you're happy with the way the bike rides just enjoy it, but if you want to chase big power figures you're riding the wrong bike. The only reason I'm modifying mine is to improve the way the power's delivered.
I sold my immaculate early injected Blackbird (claimed 164bhp) because it wasn't as much fun as my 1150GS and I rode it slower, despite it having twice the power. I think the motto for boxer BM's should be "It's not what you've got, it's how you use it".
