Tank range/Size

I am shortly about to become the owner of an R1100S, my only concern with it seems to be the small tank (18l). What sort of milage could I expect from this in touring/commuting mode, and is it possible to fit a larger tank? If so, does anyone know how much this would cost and where to buy?
Also, are there any other problems to be aware of, I hear finish can be a problem and plan to fit a fenda extenda and hugger, as it will be used all year?

tank range thread on this forum

viewtopic.php?t=3317

Winger knows all about the larger tank mods..

Painted fasteners, fork legs, brace and engine paint are finishes weak points aside from that its heavy, slow, drinks oil but is really quite cuddly and lovable in a chunky teutonic kind of way..

check for play in the swing arm/ final drive bit (not sure of technical term) as that can be expensive bearing wear, and also look for traces of oil weeping at the joint in the middle of engine as that could be a leaking clutch bearing thingy. (someone with more knowledge can no doubt fill you in).

browse this forum and also the pelican parts forum, the usual gremlins pop up.

apparently the indicators are a bit silly.

Ade pretty much supplied you with all the info, but to tie the tank range query up for you:
I have gotten as low as 90 out of the tank with lots of short commutes and heavy throttle use (once warmed up) but in touring mode 170 out of the tank is easily achieveable at about an average of 85mph.

What's the info on the bike you'll soon be owning - year, mileage, price?
Got my 1998 model with 7.5k on the clock for £3500 from a BMW dealer at the turn of the year.

Thanks for your reply's, the bike will be a 2002 model with 12k on it and be used mostly for commuting (30 miles each way in all weathers on good open roads), ie, basically as a 'main' vehicle, but with some two up work thrown in as well. Hope it's up to the job as I don't want to change bikes any more! I currently own a BMW K1200RS (my first Beemer), but apart from the brilliant shaft drive it has been a bit of a disappointment with minor reliability problems and it's sheer weight/size and lack of character....
