Scandinavia trip
I'm planning a trip to Scandinavia that sets out from Harwich to Holland then up into Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Any knowledge of good roads, places to stay, places to visit and of course places to avoid would be appreciated. The trip will be at least 14 days and there will be four bikes (two boxers and two aliens) plus pillions. Any advice on how to secure cheapest ferry bookings also appreciated.
Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose
Bounce,
I did a similar tour last year. I went out from Harwich to Holland, and came back from Gothenburg to Newcastle. I think it was all with DFDS.
I'd think about the ferry routes you use, it's easier than riding back to Holland
When are you going? The earlier you book the cheaper the ticket.

Geiranger, leading to the Trollstiggen road , a must visit in Norway.

Hi Bounce,
Funnily enough myself and a friend are on the Newcastle-Gothenburg ferry next Thursday bound for Nordkapp a few days later and thats costing £200 for both of us, the bikes and a cabin which seemed pretty reasonable. Thats through DFDS, if you go to Stavanger or Bergen with Fjordlines its even cheaper coming in at between £70 ~ £90 pp depending on whether you want to stoke the boilers or not.
We've also found that rather ironically most of the websites used by ferry companies are un-navigable so it usually pays to give them a call to sort out the costs. Have you considered Dover-Calais instead of Harwich-Hook its almost certainly cheaper and you can ride up through France into Holland in less time than you would be on the boat.
We're definitely checking out Trollstiggen on the way up as it looks too good to miss as well as the Atlantic Highway which connects a small bunch of islands nearby. Jonkoping in Sweden is also a nice place for a stop-over there's not much going on but it sits at the bottom of a huge lake so the view is pretty reasonable especially with a nice cold beer. And remember if you visit Stockholm, definitely worth it, its only a very plush overnight boat ride to Tallinn and the delights of Eastern Europe.
If you want some hotel info I can let you know which ones we used last year in Sweden and Denmark, and if you're not going for a few weeks then I can fill you in on the Norwegian ones as well when we get back.
Cheers
Shaun

Norway: go climb the Prekestolen, its a rather steep footpath up there, but it's definitely worthwhile: if the weather is clear you'll have an amazing view, 600 mtrs striaght down the cliff.

Bergen is the a nice town, most of the other cities on the west-coast are'nt really interesting / lively.
Norway is one of the most beautiful countries i've ever visited (but then again, still have to go and visit Ireland, Northern Scotland, ....).
When you travel trough Holland you might take some time to travel along the shores of the 'IJsselmeer' (it's the big lake in the middle) over small dykes and through old villages and towns with rich history. Check out RoLoo's photoreport for an impression:

Use the 'afsluitdijk' (the dyke that seperates the IJsselmeer from the Northsea) and then continue your trip through Northern Germany to Danmark.
