Simple job !

Post by vienna »

Ok thought I would give it a go!

Thought I would fit cylinder head protectors ( after scratching one of course) and the black bung thing you remove, the top comes off and leaves the plug in the thread. First 10 minute job takes hour while I remove it.

Then as have the drill to hand, decide to drill filler neck:
1st I cant get the neck out without removing tank cover
2nd cant see how to remove the badge to get the pannels off, so decide to leave it.
Lastly cant get O ring to stay in place while I re fit filler.

O well at least didn't drop a screw in the tank!

How do you remove ( and refit ) that badge and how did you keep the o ring inplace while you refit the filler cap please.

Removing side panels;
DON'T reomve the bmw roundel on the outside of the fairing panel. From the inside, near the fork legs there is the last of the hex drive 'button' type bolts - people have mentioned the badge just as a reference point coz that's approximately where it is INSIDE the panel.
Didn't have any probs with O ring when I had tank apart for enlarging, can't help on that one.

Good luck,

Lloyd

I had that problem refitting the filler cap - perhaps I'm a plonker of summit cos it seemed tricky to get the back bolts in and the whole assembly seemed a bit loose

I think I just pressed down quite hard on the top section causing the whole lot to compress and let me put the first couple of bolts back in then the rest followed as normal.

Good luck anyway

Idea - mine has the button head screws replaced with velcro strips stuck on the mating surfaces - saves fiddling under there with an Allen key!

A little inaccuracy saves a tonne of explanation.

I smeared vaseline round my ring (ooer missus!) and that kept it in place as I pressed down on the filler unit.

Done it! Got the panels off etc, drilled the hole, put the neck back in place and poked the O ring in place all round with small screwdriver. Held it all in place with 2 lengths of sticky tape, refited center panel, filler cap and on the last screw the torc head droped off the driver and went guess where? OK, where is my magnetic thingy, nice day to go fishing anyway!

Top tip: keep filler cap closed!

Not sure that the 2 halfs are tight where the tank thingy goes. It was bit of a pain getting it off. any tips re this or re fitting please.

Looking forward to going out for a good ride!
