General electrical question

Post by Duggers »

Not related to my BCR but hope someone can help anyway..

My son has just bought his first motorbike... ahhhhhhh. It's a ts50x. The problem is that the headlight works on tickover but dims to almost nothing when the bike is revved. The odd thing is that when the brake is on the headlight lights up again :?

My initial thought is that the electrics are not properly earthed until the brake light is on. Anyone got any other ideas :?:

Remind me.....battery or not?
If it was bad earth, why does the light dim when you rev it up?
I can understand the applying brake logic.

Yes, it has a battery.

I should add that the bike had been standing for at least a year, so it's possible the battery is not great but it doesn't explain to me why it all works when the brake light is on.

Try the battery on an Optimate charger AND check/clean ALL earth connections.

Is it 12v or 6v system? I started riding on a Yam RXS100 which was 6v and the battery expired. I could not be afford to replace it so when I was stationary at lights etc the lights went dim/out and also indicaters did not flash - did a lot on hand signalling in those days (I use slightly different hand gestures these days!!). They worked OK when I was on the move though. As suggested, get battery charged and take it from there.
