Do Any Tail Packs Fit An R1100S ?

Post by JoeC »

Ordered an Oxford tail pack and when I went to fit it the securing safety strap was miles too short so I got my money back. Do you use a tail pack? If so then what type. I am looking for one that you can zip/undo easily ie/leaving the base mount strapped to the bike.

I was going to buy a top box but seems as though you can only get the mounting arms & plate for 2002 onwards and my bike is 2001.

Tank bag I think would be too 'in the way' - well it felt like that when I had one on my old Fazer 600.

Next step would be to look at getting panniers but this would be too much dosh.

Any advice would be welcome. Cheers.

Hello Joe (again)

From memory there is a tail-pack that used the cowel cover fixings to secure it at the front. Quite a few of the guys use some sort of tail bag and there's always the Ventura system, though that's a bit dearer. I though you could get the mountings for pre-02 bikes to be honest, but I could be wrong.

Depending on how much storage you actually need there is the BMW Egg tank bag which is pretty neat and expands to a reasonable size as well. They pop up on here and flebay from time to time. I've managed to get a 5 litre carton of oil, a loaf and a pint of milk in mine at one time so they do hold a reasonable amount.

I'm sure some of the guys will chip in with some tail pack suggestions shortly.

Welcome again and enjoy the bike.

The tail pack that uses the seat bolts is the Wunderlich model.

search for the 'Speedbag'.

I've used it a lot and rate it. It's not zip on but it really takes very little time to put on/take off.

You could try looking for something S/H if you're on a tight budget.

I've never used a tail pack as when the bike is loaded up, my wife tends to be involved...

Ventura racks are not that dear (about £100 from memory new) and you can strap anything to them with the smaller sports rack...

Got my panniers and rails from this forum for around £250 a couple of years back. They're fantastic as long as you remember they're attached... they make the bike pretty wide

Got my BMW tank bag from this forum several years back for £25 (bargain) - contrary to most opinions, (theseadog excepted) I find it really useful either as a small store for lock, phone, wallet etc. for short blasts or extended with all sorts + Garmin + Autocom for longer trips.

This is the tailpack I have.

I have it secured to the pannier rails, but the straps are long enough to go to the subframe. It doesn't rely on bungees either :?

It expands upwards and is really well made.

Bought a Baglux Whoppa in the end along with a Baglux tank cover (£63 reduced from the maker) and Alpha bag off Ebay. Used them both at the weekend for a holiday in the New Forest.
No longer a motorcycle owner.

Tried a cheap Oxford tailpack the other week (once again - secured to the pannier rails) and found it good (it fits okay with the topbox, whereas my large pack won't fit unless on its own)

The bike looked like the Clampetts' truck by the time I got it loaded.

FWIW, the Givi topbox kit says it's for a 2002+ bike, but I've had it fitted to my 2000 model for about 2 years now, and works fine. :)

Joe,
Ventura do a kit for the R11, I fitted one to mine the first day I got it, 3yrs ago and still prefect. It's a bit pricy but you can get a grab rail to replace the 'pack rack' when not in use. Bags are top quality kit, never leak nor any zips broken. Hein Gericke do them so check out the web site or the Ventura site
