Hotels in Italy - help please

Off to Misano in June and will be going across the Alps and stopping for a couple of nights in the Aosta area. After that we’ll drop down the the Bologna factory and try to get a nose around the Ducati factory. The weekend is sorted as that’s the Superbikes. After that we are thinking about Modena and the surrounding motorsport valley/museums. We are then sorted again as we’ll be making our way back to the Alps and the gentle bimble back up to Cherbourg.

OK, question... What do you folks do for reasonably economic, low key accommodation in Italy. The web is getting useless as a tool. Each time you try to search on city hotels the search engines kick in with all the Expedia clones.

In France we tend to like the small family run hotels and use a lot of Logis. The Logis.it site has far less coverage as I guess they are much less organised in Italy...

Any personal recommendations would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Rgds, Rob

Rob, I PM-ed your question to a (friendly) Italian guy named Luca (former (?) Boxertrix board-member). I hope he is able to answer your questions.

I'm not sure if this will be much help however .......

http://www.specialplacestostay.com/home.html

We've used Alistair Sawday's very successfully in France but I'm not sure that their coverage in Italy is as comprehensive or more importantly as cheap.

Useful if you need to break your journey on the way though.

If you are near Lake Como,I can recommend this place:

Al Verde Hotel and Restaurant

Telephone & FAX: 0341.73.51.04.

Address: 23826 Mandello del Lario (Lecco) - Italy

It is run by Mario DeMarcellis and his English wife Mary. Good restaurant and reasonable accomodation. About €40 a night last time I was there.

Regards

Roger

Can't help on hotel choice, but recommend you take cash.
My experience is that credit cards are not readily accepted.
