Firstly don't sucked in by any dealer that tells you he can get you 'Brakeing' disc's he may sell e'm for every other model but good old Blunderlich stabbed us all in the back, did a private deal with Brakeing and now the price has gone up.
Try Galfer,i think my man paid 310 or so for all three disc's but thats near the knuckle price wise,so they may cost a tad more, but they come with a good pedigree.
If your interested i can come up with a number.

boxerdegisn work out at £230 for 3 discs i don t need pads so that keeps the cost down. they are made by lucas. £310 was that with pads as well?

Now Chris mate - call me a dip shit nobber with the brain of a carrot but what we are talking about is 3 small pieces of stainless steel cut with a laser by a machine.... no gromets... nothing more complicated than bread and butter ... probably takes about 5 mintes.... and £320 .... errrrrrrrrrrr am I missing something or is someone somewhere taking more piss than I can produce on a larger only diet for a fortnight in this equation? Yes I know these clever all singing all dancing milling machines cost a flippin fortune, but if you want trendy, you always pay through the nose bigstyleywinger wrote:No,so that gives you some idea of the quality your going to get for 230 quid,i also know at 310 there wasn't £20 profit in e'm.

We all know that carbon clad bikes can't do stoppies....pull the other one gov.boxerpan wrote:The stainless sheet comes in very varied grades - you get what you pay for to a certain extent. I personally don't like to gamble with stoppies

Dohhhh, how does the disc get rid of the heat???? no i don't know either!!! but Jason!!!! i exspected better!!!,but price is you thing look on e-bay you can source e'm for 130 quid there GSXR but Tony Smiff used e'm,just make sure you ain't behind me when you squeezing e'm!!!

Hang on - are you saying that the Lucas ones are sh1t?winger wrote:No,so that gives you some idea of the quality your going to get for 230 quid,i also know at 310 there wasn't £20 profit in e'm.

When I compare the cost of these things compared to the dustbinlid-sized items on my car, they all seem to cost a bomb.
I'm looking for new front discs myself, and am having a real problem deciding make/material/vendor.
Anyone give definitive costs/performance/vendor?

Nope, just make sure that you are comparing the same spec for spec coz it's a lot cheaper for the far east to stamp discs out with a forty tonne press than it is for the Europeans to laser cut the things.......once your happy with the quality then start comparing cost.Blackal wrote:Hang on - are you saying that the Lucas ones are sh1t?winger wrote:No,so that gives you some idea of the quality your going to get for 230 quid,i also know at 310 there wasn't £20 profit in e'm.![]()

Boys - how do you compare the quality then? You can't tell by looking, and unless you have access to a metallurgist then I think it's unlikely you'd be able to tell the quality in advance unless you choose to just believe what you are told. IMHO people tend to think it must be good because it's expensive - it's the same the world over. Anyway, I think the brakes effectiveness are probably 75% down to the calipers and pads - if you were blindfolded I doubt you could tell the difference between a lucas or cheap wavy and a £100 more expensive wavy disc. The latest jap brakes on the kwaks etc are probably stamped and still get rave reviews. Why would a stamped one be worse or less effective than a laser cut one? They all have to pass EU type approval so they must be up to scratch surely.
Now I freely admit I'm not that bright and that 90% of the time I don't know what I'm talking about but I think the price of motorcycle discs is astronomical compared to the ones for cars and that the equation for the price is (£price = £max people are willing to pay) rather than (£price = £cost + reasonable proffit). Its the same in every fashion concious/image driven industry and the motorcycle market is no different.

I'm sure there is some difference between the discs but is it genuinely that discernable?
I'm not yet at the stage where my reactions and ability are honed to the point where it's the grade of metal between my pads that are going to be the distinguishing factor between n a set of brown slacks or a calm and controlled journey.
I know people have commented on how some pads are noticeable different... but has anyone fitted discs and then replaced them with ones they felt were noticeable better. I'm geniunely interested
