New BMW Owner

Thanks to the couple of members who caught me trying to make contact thru' the apparently 'dead' yahoo group.

Got my year old R1100S from SPC beginning of December and have clocked up my first 1000 miles with it- After 10 years of Jap twins I'm still getting used to the BMW's ways, and am frustrated by greasy, cold roads, because I've got the feeling I'm not getting the best out of it by any means.

Three questions:

Is the slight 'drone' from the front; bearings, tyre or the sound telelever suspension makes, is 120 miles before the fuel light comes on about right, and what's the best hugger at a reasonable price?

Luvin' the easy cleaning, heated grips and blasting BMW repmobile drivers with something with the same badge!!!

Cheers, Dave

did you say easy cleaning? (personal bugbear)
120 miles to fuel light is about average... I managed 70miles round town recently (a new record....)
not sure about the drone.

welcome to the S club.

Hello Dave, and welcome, takes a bit of getting used to but you probably grow to love it.

Okay here goes.

A) Probaby tyre noise believe it or not. Roadtec Z6 seem particularly prone to it when new, but I've found it quietens with miles.

B) I usually get around 150, but have 110 before. Depends on mileage as well, should get an improvement after 10K as well as the bike being a LOT smoother and more responsive. Generally seems to get better with age.

C) Horse for courses, most favour the Imlberger type tingy had the pyramid and Imlberger, still got the Imlcheeseburger type thing, looks great works well, and I'm sure a certain member has pm'd you a great deal.

Welcome, enjoy, and ask away. . . .

Admire your tastes in bikes there Dave! Welcome.
Lots of great info in the archives for perusing with a coffee.
Is the drone just a different pitch of intake noise to what you are used to?
120 to the light is right. Refuel by 150 is ideal. You won't get much beyond 160 unless you do funny things to the tank!

I'm well impressed by the amount of activity on this site - Thanks for all the feedback.

Surprised with the amount of not so good feedback for SPC I fopund browsing through past mailings - Have to say when my choke packed up a week or so after I got the S, I just dropped in and they sorted it on the spot.

Cheers, Dave

80 miles 'til the light in London.

Still way cheaper, cleaner, and faster than the tube.

120 to the light is okay. Expect better on the motorway. If you're new to boxers then for goods sake keep an eye on the oil. They do drink a bit. You can fill it up with super synth or cooking fat, doesn't seem to matter? Just make sure you keep an eye on it. After a while you get a second sense for it.

The S went twin spark same time as the rest of the 259's.

No probs - My last bike was a Yamaha TRX, and they are very very thirsty - I'm topping up weekly!

The other worry is this 'Do Not Warm Up' warning. I commute and spend time waiting at lights, locked in traffic where I can't filter in town etc - What's the difference between sitting at lights for 5 minutes and warming up??
