Site software update: 26 February 2025

Post by Paul »

Folks,

** Sorry, I have had to put this back one day from the original planned date**

I have been putting off the task of updating the Boxertrix site software for quite some time now, because it's a big and scary operation for me, and I've lazily fallen back on the old cop out of "if it ain't broke (enough), don't fix it". Sadly for me, I think the time for procrastination is long since past, so I am going to take a crack at bringing the site software up to date in the coming weeks.

To update the site, I and going to have to take down access for all users for a day. Hopefully I can get that updated and tested within one day, but it may extend to two days if I have problems and have to restore the site back to its current state. I am therefore targeting Wednesday February 26 as the day of the update. I will block access to the site from 9:00am, then will start backing everything up before attempting the site update. I will try to bring the site back online ASAP, in either it's new updated form, or restoring the backup if I fail with the upgrade for any reason. I expect that it will be off line for most of the working day on the 25th, so try and login that evening or the following day.

Thanks in advance for your patience while I get this sorted.

Paul
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

Hi Folks,

I can report partial success:

The board is now running the latest version of the bulletin board software, which is the principle goal of today's maintenance break, HOWEVER, the code used to add all of the custom "indicator" icons to topics and threads to show if they have been read or not has changed significantly, and it might take a day or two for me to get my head around that and fix it. In the mean time, the site is working with the default graphics for those features.

Another thing I was hoping to get working was https access to the site, rather than http. Users who have tried accessing https://boxertrix.com/phpBB have found that it gives a certificate error. The way around this is to access the site as https://www.boxertrix.com/phpBB and that will then match the certificate definition of the domain name.

Please feel free to use the board whilst I sort out the remaining cosmetic issues, and if you come across any problems with it, please let me know by adding a post to this thread describing the issue you have encountered.

Regards,

Paul

Hi Steve,

See my update above. You need to specify the "www." in front of "boxertrix.com" and that will then correctly match the certificate the hosting company have set up. So, https works with www.boxertrix.com, but not boxertrix.com

Regards,

Paul

That's very odd - sounds like the hosting company don't know what they're doing.....

Unless for some reason they've got a hard-coded reference to "www.boxertix.com" buried somewhere in their systems and the tech you were dealing with wasn't prepared to make the proper adjustment.

Many thanks for all the hard-work though - I know I was one of the reasons you did the work, so I would like you to know that is very much appreciated.
