Fast approaching the 12,000 mile service on my twin spark - do all four plugs need changing, and if so does any one know what the gap is for the smaller ones.

I was going to post this a separate item....sorry for pinching your thread!!

I was reading up on a few bits for my 6000 mile service on my 2003 Boxer Cup. All I was wondering is what brand of Spark Plugs do you lot use and what grade and type of oil and air filters do you use.... and last but not least where can you get it all from??

I don't think you need to change plugs for the 6000 mile. As for oil, that is a topic that has been discussed many times. I use 5W50 fully synthetic in mine (7000 miles now) but many will tell you not to do this. For filters I just pop along to my local BMW dealer and by them, I could mail order from motorworks or Motobins but the postage would probably make them more expensive.

Oil's like tyres use what ever floats your boat!!,plugs are Bosch Platinum FR6DP most of us have used for years,mainly because they are same a the NGK and a third(or less) of the price,go to any BM/Merc?VW dealer for southners theres a motor chain store that sells e'm,the last lot i had paid 30 quid for 10,ought to do a group buy!!!!

As to when you change e'm,as part of the regime for keeping on top of the vibes don't think i've ever done more than 2000 miles on a set of plugs,but then at 6 quid a pair hardly breaking the bank!!.

[Bing... light bulb above head] I've just phoned a supplier in Cambridge who sells them for £3.49 each but only has one in stock (he was confused too).

Bulk buy would need to be minimum of 100 and this would drop the price to £2.00 each I'll happily buy them if there are enough takers.

Can someone just confirm the reference is FR6DP as the handbook says FR6LDC, which I assume is the old reference.

Just to clarify further - I take it this if for the 2000 and earlier S'.

The individual box says FR6DP1X but the box of ten that mine came as says just FR6DP.

For those that are interested:

Primary NGK BKR 7 EKC

Secondary NGK DCPR 8 EKC or Bosch YR6LDE

Gap 0.8mm (Old money 0.03in)

Further reading of maintenance instructions booklet reveals that plugs are changed at 24k. Seems a long time any comments?

Dealer recommended that my mate change all four plugs in his RT at the 12k but, ultimately, it was up to him.

Personally, I'd change them and keep the old ones as spares.
