Front axle removal 1200s

Hi All,

I need to put a new front tyre on my 1200S before I sell it. For the life of me, I can't see how the front axle comes out. In the old days, there was a hole you could put a rod through and twist the axle loose, but not on this one and I can't shift mine.

I've undone the pinch bolt on the RHS and removed the calipers, but no joy. I'm assuming it comes out left to right (riders point of view)?

Have I missed something?

Dave

Assuming the S is the same as the GS/RT/ST, you need the hex key to unscrew the front axle - http://www.ebolt.co.uk/bmw-22mm-front-a ... 6279-p.asp. eBay has loads of them for sale, most are just a hex 'block' to use with a socket. Item no. 161199062031 is £3.99 delivered.

And yes, it unscrews the way you describe! :) There's a spacer on the left side (when sitting on the bike), so make a note of how it needs to go back, although the end that comes out of the axle tube is usually nice and clean, making it easy to work out which way round it goes!

Pete is correct, hex key in RHS sitting on bike, undoes as normal and slides straight out.

Ah, got it. Thanks guys. I've managed to cobble together a suitable socket to undo the axle.

The owners book just says 'remove the axle' or something - no reference to a special tool.

Never mind. All done now.

Thanks again.
