I've just been reading about Beatrice (Tilly) Shilling, motorcycle and aviation engineer, successful motorcycle racer, and designer of a fix for a serious problem with Merlin engines in Spitfires and Hurricanes. This fix was affectionately known by airmen as Miss Shilling's Orifice (or Tilly's Orifice); it prevented the Merlins from flooding and stalling in negative g manoeuvres.
Bought her first motorbike at the age of 14. Correct priority, in my book.

My kind of gal - though it seems as if she didn't suffer fools.

Just reading about her whilst munching on a lovely breakfast in Wetherspoons next to Bolsover Castle!
The pub bearing her name in Farnborough looks to be an interesting place too.
