Whoa there! (Throttle issue?)

So... riding down the freeway in an 80 kph section. Coming up to a 100 kph section so down to 4th and ready for a nice shove to get up to the new speed. Pull into lane to overtake and wind throttle on. Rewarded with nice dollop of thrust forwards. All normal so far..

Then.. rev limit reached (already?!), roll throttle off, nudge clutch and pop into 5th, revs still at maximum, can hear it bouncing off the limiter. Close throttle, revs still at max, can I be in neutral? But throttle is FULLY CLOSED! WTF!? Back down to 4th, and my thumb it going for the kill switch then... revs drop to normal level for gear/speed combination and.. nothing else weird happens. Bike rides normally. No warning lights or messages. All seems fine.

Anyone got any ideas what could have happened?

Check the cables at the cable splitter. Might be too much free-play in them or perhaps one is sticking from being gunged up.
