Oil filter issues?

Post by milleplod »

I've just seen this post on BMRider -

"Anyone heard of any problems with genuine bmw oil filters failing shortly after a BMW dealer service causing the engine to sieze? Down here in Dorset within our IAM Group we had one instance on an RT a couple of months ago and then today a K1600 engine expired big time a day after a service. Appears the oil filter won't allow oil through the outer edge holes and through the filter medium within and then the central safety valve doesn't let enough oil through to save the engine. (we got our hands on a old one and cut it open to see how it should work but not being technically proficient I don't fully understand how it should work-my understanding is that on the faulty filter you pour oil into the outer holes in the top and oil should appear in the centre hole but it doesn't.). Any one throw any light on this! Appears some filters may be faulty but totally at random. Doesn't appear to be a batch problem as others fitted before and after to other bikes appear ok. They appear to work to start with then fail. The RT managed about 10 miles and the K16 did a little better at about 80 miles".

Anyone on here heard of anything?

I find it difficult to understand that to be fact. I am thinking that a an oil warning light should come on and that would be the moment to kill the engine before running it to failure, Who is blaming the oil filter? the technician who carried out the oil change procedure?

Strange one for sure.
Fiat Panda.
Fiat Scudo (with speedblock, pipe carrier, reversing sensors, reversing camera, tow bar, some new rust and Fake Plumber logo)

started out with nothing, still have most of it left.

The original "test" doesn't take account of the DP across the filter in normal use - which might be over 1 bar in use. Pouring oil in, and expecting it to migrate under static head (with room-temp oil) at any significant rate - is expecting a lot.

As Boxerscott alludes to - the oil pressure sensor should be downstream of the filter, and if you shut the engine down when that light illuminates - the fluid film between surfaces should remain long enough to avoid seizure/bearing failure.
