Alternator belt.

If anyone's thinking of changing theirs, I recently found out that the belt used - Continental 4PK611 (supercedes the 4PK592) - is the same as the one used on a 1990s Hyundai Accent power steering pump! BMW price is around £18/19, eBay when listed for the R1200 in its various guises its around £14/15......Euro Car Parts as a Hyundai part and its £5.70 delivered! :)

eBay listing number is 300935594517.

Apologies if this is common knowledge!

Excellent advice for those not aware (that multi rib automotive belts are used on boxers) I'm pretty sure though that the 611 mm belt is used with the higher output alternators (abs , heated grips etc) which is what I use and the 592mm belt is not superceded by it. If purchasing, it may be worth removing the cover and checking if the belt number is still visible. 19mm is way too much slack to take up with normal adjustment.

Update.....
On realoem there's more info and details of the part number does indeed confirm the 592 is for the lower spec alternator with the abs or heated grip model having the higher spec alternator that as Nigel suggests is the 611 mm one.

Ooh er chaps!

A bit more digging done, turns out Conti do 2 types of 611 - the 'standard' poly one, at a nominal 611mm long, and a 611ELAST, which is 592mm long but can stretch to 611mm if needed to.

So, a 611ELAST is perfectly OK if a 592 is already in use - just under a tenner on eBay.

Guess what the one is I've been banging on about, and bought...... :roll:

My BCR was a 611mm, No abs , no heated grips.

Re reading your original post I guess you are talking about a 1200s.. :oops: . It looks like they have no adjustment on the alternator and do use the "stretch" belt you mention . My comments were related to R1100S.. :oops:

I think the conclusion, other than that Hull accents are fine, is that a 611ELAST will fit bikes that originally had a standard 592 or a standard 611. Somewhere on one of the Yank sites, a guy explains how the 611ELAST is easier to fit to a bike originally having a 592 because of its 'give'.

I'm going to buy a 611ELAST one later today - I'll report back....when I find out its either too long or its snapped like an elastic band! :lol:
