Does anyone know the fine situation for getting Gatso'd in France and whether the fine gets sent to the UK? I set one off the other week. I know how fast I was going but not the speed limit. Either 90 or 110kmh. It was at the end of a 12 hour day, 8 of which were in the pouring rain.

No, you will be OK Steve, there is a new directive as of May this year that covers all member states of the EU, but the UK and Ireland have an opt out until 2017.

I take it that you ran a rear facing gatso then? most in France are front facing, at least they were last time I visited.

However that won't stop some UK firms who are seeing this as a money making oppportuntiy and buying the data from our EU partners.

They then send you a very official looking demand for money....promising dire consequences if you don't pay.

...You should ignore it and if they continue and you want reassurance then just go to www.pepipoo.co.uk and post there for advice.

I stand to be corrected but I think the only fines for speeding that can be levied in the EU is by officers at the roadside

One thing about the French system - is that there appears to be less complaints from Brits being caught speeding - there.

Not like in UK.

I saw several ground mounted grey box speed cameras, fixed at 45 degrees to catch rear number plates during my trip last month. I suspect it is only a matter of time before all speeders will be sent letters.

To be honest you have be pretty stupid to get caught out by a fixed camera in france. They have huge signs stating exactly where they are well in advance. And they are there exactly where they say.!!!

What gus said. Usual targets are on the motorway. Stick to the lesser routes when on the bike and keep a relaxed pace. Much better to tour France that way.

Thanks for calling me stupid Gus. Much appreciated. I had been on the road for 12 hours, it was getting dark coming down a mountain road towards Grenoble. I was near my destination and just wanted to get there. I was in giddy up mode I guess having been held up by the weather all day. I have 'never' clipped a camera before In France. I know how it works and I usually see the signs. Like I say, it was the end of a long and very wet day. 8 hours through non stop torrential rain during a 12 hour day does that to a person and if it hadn't been for the rain I had planned to stick to non motorway for the whole trip, but thanks again for the self righteous comment.

As Boxered said, there are plans in motion for EU states to be able to get the money out of us once we're back home. Does Europe have a points system like us and does that mean the smudges will count in UK?

You quite possibly didn't miss the signs - an awful lot of them have been removed in a bid to 'improve road safety'. Some are still in place though, in a typical fudge by the French when various ministers were spouting conflicting info about what was going to happen - initially, 'they're all going'....followed by 'there will be local consultation before any are removed'....then back to....well, you get the drift! Suffice to say, a lot have gone.

The French system deducts points, starting at 12. But they classify speeding offences at different levels, which get different points. At present it would be impossible to cross-connect the points, although the imposition of fines would, I'd have thought, be fairly simple to put in place.

f90x: same thing happened to me and Metropolis2k on our way back to London more than one year ago.
The last stretch to Dijon, it was late, we were tired and we both set off a speed camera. Limit was 110km/h in that bit, I thought it was 130, and we were both doing around 120.
Clearly saw the rear facing speed cameras flash twice as both bikes passed.

To this day, received nothing.

Just came back from Italy on the bike yesterday and did my fair bit of riding in France. Always saw the signs before every speed camera. And that as always been the case over the years.

Anyway... I might have been distracted on a small stretch of road in Switzerland.
I'll be keeping my eye on incoming mail

No, I'm not! Down in the Correze, some signs definitely disappeared shortly after the announcement was made (2011/12?), most of them went back up again after about 6 months, but I'm sure some are still missing. Perhaps the majority have now been reinstated.

When I'm over there, I lean towards the assumption that they're no longer a given!
