Speedo calibration?

Is the speedometer in the R1100s able to be calibrated? Is that the correct term?

Mine seems to be awfully optimistic. I was on what we call the freeway the other day (speed limit 65 mph) doing an indicated 80 mph. Quickly developed a queue behind me so I had to pull over to let them pass.

I'm guessing I was actually doing a bit over 70 mph.

I'd like to know how fast I'm really going...

Has anyone tried having the speedometer calibrated?

Not sure about the calibration, but would suggest that you do a comparison on a level, straight road at steady speeds, against a GPS.

In UK there is an allowable +10% tolerance (if I remember correctly), but you are not allowed an "under-reading" speedo.


In the US - there may be a different requirement?

I reckon most of my cars/bikes are about 5% over-reading.

I had my wife following me in the GTI, both the GTI and the R1100S were indicating 82 MPH.

So, unless they are both off by the same amount…

I've run the GPS on my iPhone and compared it to the GTI speed reading. The GTI is usually within 1 or 2 MPH of the GPS.

All of which leads me to the conclusion that most everyone on our freeways is driving like a bat out of hell.

Sounds like your speedo may be set for Kilometres per hour with a Mile per hour clock face ????

As a previous poster noted , use a gps or a stop watch .

60 mile per hour = 1 minute per mile travelled .

2 minutes per mile at 30 mile per hour .

My R1200ST speedo is way optimistic compared to GPS. 100mph on the clock is actually only 91mph on the GPS. AT lower speeds it is marginally better 40mph on the clock is actually about 35mph on the GPS.

You can calibrate all you like it will still be inaccurate due to the tyre cicumferance changing as the tyre wears. So would you calibrate with new worn or half worn tyres???????????????????????

Better to just check against a GPS and remember the offset.

If it's reading the same as the car I'd say that it was fine. It's been a while since I was in the states but I do recall that when a Californian freeway wasn't busy everyone upped their speed. I'm used to driving at 85ish on uk motorways and was surprised that I could do that in California and be equal with other traffic. I think the answer to your speedo problem is 'go faster!!!'
