R1200S seat- bloody hell

Post by 3narf »

OK, I've done a few hundred miles now so I can comment on various things.

The seat is comfy for about 10 minutes. This is the first BMW I've ridden- I thought they were supposed to be comfortable! I'm going to have to do something with it. I've read some of the other posts about corbin seats & having them recovered/reconstructed.

The riding position isn't brilliant tbh. Pegs are too far forward and too high (part of this is no doubt due to the seat being too thin and flat so a more padded seat would help here). I never thought I'd be able to say my Morini 3 1/2 Sport was more comfortable, but it was. Maybe I'm just getting old.

Other than this stuff I think it's a brilliant bike. It's quirky and full of character, and very quick. When I read the engine had been retuned from the 1100 to give it more top end I was ambivalent, but the midrange torque is massive. I wasn't sure what to expect with the eccentric throttle pulley arangement but it just feels normal to me. I don't feel any need to fiddle with it.

I find the thing unwieldy when I'm manoeuvering it around at a standstill, but once my feet are on the pegs it doesn't feel heavy or bulky at all.

So, I just need to sort that seat...

That's interesting. I hated the eccentric throttle - an answer to a problem that didn't exist! The mid-range torque can be deceptive - because it has so much it still feels good on part throttle openings, but if you contort the wrist to wind on the last bit of the throttle - wow! Big difference.

I did not like the throttle at first, but don't even think about it now.

I also find the bike very comfortable, perhaps that is just my build. I am 6ft tall and find it has plenty of leg room, nice relationship between seat, bars and pegs. I sometimes think about getting heli-bars to lift me up a little, but its not really an issue so have never bothered.

The only concession I sometimes make to comfort is to wear cycling shorts under my leathers if I know I am going for a very long ride.

Last year I rode 588 miles from Vosges back to Lutterworth only stopping for fuel and the tunnel. I was tired, but not uncomfortable.

I agree you get used to the throttle Jim, but it's the concept that irritates me! It's so pointless. Why not just have a 'proper' throttle?

I suspect it's covert BMW 'elf 'n' safety!

I found the bike generally comfortable too. A proper big mileage bike.

I didn't think the seat was too bad... I found the bar position to be where the discomfort was, a set of Helibars put that right.

the position of the pegs is Ok, but I ride with the balls of my feet on the peg, not my instep, maybe that's the difference?

the throttle response is a bit odd, but after a while I just forgot about it.

The concept I think is sound. The eccentric throttle is designed to give a bit of control to a fairly unrefined engine at low throttle openings. In standard form the fuelling is pretty harsh at low speed, low throttle. I don't think the concept was entirely necessary, or successfully executed.

I still hate the throttle and after a 100 miles of decent roads my wrist aches. A 200 mile day is uncomfortable and doing it for a couple of days is just painful. I have the quick(er) throttle mod but I'm still going to take out that roller to lessen the eccentric as much as it can. The seat. Well, Im 5'7" and I have the heli bars and the overall comfort is ok and I'm fine with the pegs but being skinny of arse the seat can get to me after a while but as has been mentioned here already, I too use padded cycling undies for long runs and on my last euro trip I also used a sheepskin on the saddle. Having both enabled me to do 400 miles in a day.

i'm feeling the same way about my BCR, the seat is so uncomfortable I couldn't do more than about 20-30 miles at a time, cycling shorts and thick leathers have helped a huge amount so that i can do 100 miles in one hit at a push. my K1200r was totally different I could do an entire tank without any discomfort, and the R1200rs i test rode was the same. did a 2 hour test ride without any pain.
I think i'm going to have to invest in a custom made saddle , although i've never liked the look of them.

Hahaha

:D

Well, I don't know what's going on. I settled into a comfortable position on the way to work yesterday and found I didn't have to move or fidget. I was fine all the way to work, home again (2 hrs in persistent heavy rain) and back in this morning.

Maybe I've just got used to it?

I'll stop moaning now. For a while.
