I only got my R12S in January this year, a 2006 Silver/Red striped colour scheme.
After reading all the R12S posts I could find, I have a couple of trivial questions I'm looking to understand if anyone can answer them for my curiosity:
1. Mine came with a black seat, but what's the deal with the Red seats I've seen so much of with this colour scheme? Was it a 2007 year specific option for the candy cane model only or a USA market only thing?
2. My VIN is ZP50348 with a production date of 29 Aug 2006. I noticed some 2007 models quoted with VIN’s 3xxxxx. How does a later year production end up with lower series VIN? Or is the VIN sequence quite arbitarary?
Cheers
Pete

I don't know the answers, but can perhaps muddy the waters!
The first 1200s I ever saw was on the BMW stand at the Moscow motor show. It was red / silver with a black seat. Every red / silver model I have ever seen since had a red seat which I thought was standard for customer bikes.

Could be some markets shipped with black, some individual bikes were shipped with black, factory shortage maybe, or yours has been changed since. The plastic has been known to tear.
Regarding the vin / model year. I don't know for sure, It could just be down to when the dealer registered the bike. There are no model year differences (options and market differences aside) and I have seen some data suggesting every 1200s was actually manufactured before December 2006, regardless of when / where actually sold.

I've never seen (in the flesh or photo) a Colgate without a red seat. I would guess the original was damaged or stolen perhaps and replaced with a black one. Maybe.

That's interesting - in the Haynes manual it says the later bikes came with a service interval reminder (I think) - I'll have to check to be sureHerb wrote:I don't know the answers, but can perhaps muddy the waters!

Jim, great photos, thanks for sharing. Even the Colgate looks great
Here's a link to a photo of mine as purchased & the seat is OEM. Black seats seems to be the norm over here from all I've seen, hence my curiosity!

Steve, the alternate transmission is (2.75:1 or 33/12 as stamped under the FD). Seems the alternate turned out to the norm from what I can gather through a few threads on this issue. I should go back to some of those VINs I've seen & punch them through the VIN identifier & see what production dates come up. Will probably answer my question. Cheers!
