Bar End Weights ... necessary ?
They're pretty massive on 11s, are they really needed ?
Are they mainly anti vibration or anti tank slapper ? ( Can't actually imagine the later on a tele fronted Bxr !! )
Has anybody tried taking them off, I'm very tempted to at least give it a try ?

My 1200ST has a balance shaft and the engibne is much smoother than the 1100s it also spins up faster and is happier at higher revs than the 1100s but it still has the same size bar end weights and I still get pins n needles especially when riding two up. My theory is that the engine is working harder two up and the vibration patterns change - I have no scienbtific basis for this claim I omly know its true. Just sayin.
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity
I'm pretty sure that a horizontally opposed twin cancels out secondary (as well as primary). If that is true, then the only remaining source of major shakes, that I can think of, is the offset couple. Presumably that is the reason for the balance shaft?Corvus wrote:
...........Not sure about secondary vibration, that's a tricky one.
I've heard that early oil heads suffered with vibration caused by the the valve Gear! Don't know how true that is.
As for the bar end weights, if you're curious take em out and test it. Then you'll know.

Some years back, when after market parts were readily available for R1100S, there were carbon fibre or alloy (in various colours) bar ends to be had. That was at the time when carbon fibre was the in product. No one on here encouraged their purchase. My bar ends have, on the inner edges, acquired a very nice worn, polished appearance, revealing a bronze metal. Serious weight.
Oyster. 1999 R1100S. Almost original.

I had a set of brass bar ends that came with a KTM 640. I could not use them on that bike because of the handguards I installed. If any bike needs bar end weights it's this one.
They are now installed on the HP2, so I am hoping they will get rid of that high RPM buzz that the clip ons seem to transfer to my hands.
They are a very close match to the gold on the Ohlins so they look cool also.
Hopefully they work??
Cheers

Go for it! tek em off and tell us what happens (apart from the throttle sleeve falling off)kfrogzx7 wrote:They're pretty massive on 11s, are they really needed ?

Fiat Scudo (with speedblock, pipe carrier, reversing sensors, reversing camera, tow bar, some new rust and Fake Plumber logo)
started out with nothing, still have most of it left.
