Panniers question
Gents, after a bit of advice please. I'll need some Panniers at some point but I'm not sure which ones are which for an R1100S. What should I be looking for? All I know is that some are different shape to take account of exhausts etc, but that doesn't apply to mine (I think). Are they also a generic fit?
For example, I was looking at these that are coming off a K1100LT but have no idea whether they'll fit or not and I don't really know what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Aside from those marked as an R1100S you can also look for ones that fit an R1150RT.
These for example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Touring-P ... 27ea24cff9

Thanks. I thought it might come down to looking for ads that say 'off an R1100S', would make sense. Those ones that you've linked to are different from each other. I think one is bigger than the other but the sides facing the bike are a different shape, does that matter?

Don't know if you are aware but there are a pair of R1100S panniers and mounting rails for sale in the Bits & Bobs forum at the moment. Might be worth an offer?
As for the different size I believe they are all like this as they were also made to fit the R1100R which had a side exhaust (although may be and quite often are wrong).

Thanks mate, I saw those for sale earlier but I don't need them right now and have the rails already.
I've seen pictures of them on bikes where they look symmetrical from the back so just assumed that the panniers were identical in every way. If not, then at least I know so that when I do finally get round to buying some I know what I'm looking for (or not).

The ones I linked to are identical to the panniers I've had on both my S's. I've just checked as mine are in the house at the moment and those panniers are correct.
The bit that's cut away on then left pannier in the picture is actually at the front so from the back they look symmetrical.

According to this website: http://www.evolutioncycles.com/product%20info.htm
scroll down a bit, mid picture, they are not equal size.

You'll find a few places saying the 1150GS ones will fit.........THEY DON'T!
I'd be tempted to get the ones advertised on here, at least you'll know you're definitely be getting the ones for the 1100S and you can always advertise the rails on here in the future as they will sell.

I'd never really noticed the difference in size. I have pannier bags for them and the bags are identical so there isn't much difference.JoeyDeacon wrote:Thanks for that, appreciated. Does one look bigger than the other or is that my imagination? Do they come in different sizes or are they standard? Sorry for the stupid question but when you don't know..!
The lids mentioned above alter the sizes. City lids are flat and make the bike more narrow. I have the standard lids which make the bike very wide but it's never been an issue (and I'm practically in central London).

Just for everyone's reference - the cut out visible on the inner face of the RHS pannier on these is for the US spec charcoal cannister* that is mounted just above and behind the RHS pillion hanger, but only on US bikes.metropolis2k wrote:Aside from those marked as an R1100S you can also look for ones that fit an R1150RT.

BMW (afaik) never made a 'Euro' spec pannier - they just made the panniers fit globally whether the bike has the charcoal cannister or not (sensible from a production engineering perspective)
The cut-outs you see on some pannier sets on the LHS pannier inner face are for bikes with higher set exhausts (GS/R/Rockster). The RT and S use the full-size LHS pannier because they can . The S because the exhaust are up the middle, the RT because the exhaust is mounted lower and the full-size pannier fits over it. I can't remember which set up the RS has offhand.
* the charcoal cannister catches the fuel tank overflow pipe so that the fuel-laden air is filtered before being vented to atmosphere - it's an emissions regulation thing. Bikes marketed in the rest of the world don't have the cannister fitted (but the lug on the frame rail is still there if you look).
