Only 500 made for homologation purposes - many of those found their way onto the track or rally stage.
Then they rusted badly when used as road cars.
It's hard to find figures on the number of surviving cars - but I reckon into low double figures now.
So... this all means that £40k is about the right price for a nice one - the most expensive example went for £65k, I believe.
You're probably right - but as you say, a limited market - so hard to pin a price on it. Think they were £15,000 when new? I had the normal 3-door version. Huge performance in its day.

I suspect that the DVLA (from whom this info comes) don't distinguish between the ordinary Cosworth, and the RS500.
