GoPro mounting positions

Post by Motocod »

Hi Folks,

I'm doing a trackday in a few weeks time, and a mate is lending me his GoPro. I'm hoping to get some nice footage of wobbling around (not done a trackday in five years, so a bit rusty).

Just wondered if anyone else has mounted a GoPro on their 11S, and if so, where and how? I'd ideally like something near the front wheel, as it'll capture the suspension movement.

Suggestions and advice welcomed!

before you go through too much hassle check that the track actualy allows onboard cameras. I understand some don't

Yes indeed. I used to organise trackdays myself, and have come across that restriction in the past. I'm tempted to hide the camera within one of the air scoops below the headlight.

Wouldn't bother if that's the only place you can think of. IMO Track day footage needs to include part of the bike rather than just being a front facing view with no perspective.

A rear facing camera mounted on the seat sub-frame provides an interesting perspective and you get to see the wheel movement.

For a front facing view just mount on the bodywork above the cylinder.

Assuming cameras are allowed just experiment with position. Just take lots of gaffe tape with you.

Good luck

Agreed.

No Limits and Focused Events have no problem with cameras on the bikes, as long as the cameras are attached firmly to the bike.
At least, this is my experience.

I do have a RAM ball on the top yoke that I normally use to attache the Zumo mount.
I bought a RAM ball for the GoPro case and I just stick the camera there.

The view is much better if you can fix the camera centrally on the tank (did some tests with the suction cup), using one of the screws from the fuel cap... but I couldn't be bothered. :D

This is the result (of me wobbling around a couple of weeks ago):

Or, if you rotate the support towards the back, you get a slightly wider frame:

(by the way, the other 1100S I am following here is Mr. metropolis2k)

Regarding having a camera... I was really skeptic in the beginning because for years I've been worried of doing something stupid (because of) with the camera on.
Actually... I just keep it running there and forget about.
And it's nice to watch your sessions at home later.

You can see the camera here:

Nice footage, looks great!

I've checked with the organisers - they say it's down to the marshalls to satisfy themselves they're happy it's not going to fall off.

I'm looking at the possibility of putting it on the pannier rail, facing forward, so you can see me hanging off. I'll have a play around with it when I get to the track. Otherwise, I'll just clamp it to the top yoke.

You too - had no idea until the other guy (whose name I didn't catch) mentioned it was you that posted the reply!

Brilliant day - great to see your BCR going so well! Thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I managed to get the GoPro mounted up and working ok before the battery ran out, and it turns out I got about 10-15 mins of footage. Looks brilliant! I'm just uploading it to youtube now, and I'll post a link shortly.

Also a few pics I took around the paddock. Should have taken the opportunity to get all three R1100S together.

Also, I have a couple of iPhone videos of you and my friend Tom going trough the bend uphill (forgot the name).

Will post that as well.

Yes!
I really want to go back...
I think we've been extremely lucky with the weather yesterday, so I'd rather wait next may/june, but we should organize it :)
