Sorry but I don't understand your post.
Whats the difference between eBay/Gumtree and local papers, autotrader and cards on the wall in tesco?
It is always a case of buyer beware.
The old adage once again rings true, if something looks to good to be true it probably is.
There are arseholes everywhere.

I've used eBay a few times and not had any problems, but I am very careful and do plenty research into what I'm buying/selling, same as I'd do whatever channel I was buying/selling through.
Never used gumtree, so can't comment on that particular organisation, however, that is a pretty nasty incident reported in your link. As conkerman says though, I think buyers need to be careful responding to any adverts.
I've had more problems with face-to-face deals in my time.

Dealing face to face is a skill I've never understood or mastered, and I envy folks who can do it. A failing in my nature I guess.

Whilst I think ebay charges are OTT, they are not hidden,

Aye, for fucks sake toughen up, do your research, if you don`t like it then don`t use it, its a business not a feckin charity, if it sorts your needs at a cost you can afford or incorporate into your sale then fine, if not walk away but don`t winge about it...

I find E bay ok in the main .
I got my BMW off E Bay ...
& I think I got a fair deal , Ohlins , Lazer pipes etc ...
I don't think the owner knew what he had , nothing was mentioned , I spoke to him several times , never mentioned any extras ....
I have been dealing with E bay for about 5 years , fortunately no bad deals up to now .
As was said earlier , "If it looks too good to be true....... " I avoid these deals.

got to be ever so careful as what and how it it to be dealt with, but charges are unjustifiably too high for seller. I sold my old bike for £450(half it's real value), and was sure there was mistake, until I had reply explaining their charges again- £42 of fees! as +total sale value+ was added, PayPal had its cut....
Yes but you can't blame ebay or paypal because you didn't bother to check the charges.
It's very clear and certainly not hidden.

.... and every auction company charges
On the plus side I've found ebay got resolutions/refunds for any problem issues quite quickly on the odd times I've had to deal with them

I've sold two bikes on Ebay - each time, the charges were around £17. Classified ad). - Can't complain - how much would BikeTrader or MCN Cost
They are a business - not a benevolent society.
And - If you insist on calling them "Fleabay" - at least have the integrity to stay away from them and not use their service.
