Went out for spin into Wales this morning only for the charging warning light to come on, I pulled over to find oil pissing out of the alternator cover, and its blown back over my boots, the header pipes and the rear tyre looks like a seal has blown and soaked the alty belt with oil, causing it to either slip or become detached from the pulley wheel(s). Bugger!
Ended up having to be recovered home by the RAC, only a 45 minute wait for the recovery truck so full marks to them.
That’s the first time I’ve ever been let down by my 12S in 6 years of ownership, ah well, 1st time for everything eh?

I’m going to sulk my way through a couple of beers now

Oh dear, glad it wasn't worse as anything could have happened with oil on the back tyre. Anyway keep us posted as to what let go.

Damn matey that sucks .... on a positive hopefully that seal will be easy to replace, on a good note at least it's not the one on the clutch that one scares me!

I wonder if it's corrosion under the black bearing cover that's allowed a leak (as in this page)

Thanks for that link Steve, luckily I have a new, powder coated cover waiting to be fitted, I have already had one replaced under warranty for corrosion, but that was 5 years ago, this one has started corroding last year, I doubt its corrosion that's caused the seal ( if that's what it is) to blow, but you never know. shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

that reminds me of a joke, a penguin is driving his car to the beach when smoke starts coming from under the bonnet, he pulls into a garage and the mechanic tells him to come back in an hour, so off he goes to the sea front where he buys himself a 99, after an hour he goes back and the mechanic says "you've blown a seal" the penguin wipes his mouth and says "no that's just ice cream.

I really tried to choose my words carefully during my post for exactly that reason

You're absolutely right there, it was bone dry when I pulled up, but was absolutely pissing down by the time the recovery truck arrived, and my rear tyre was completely rainbowed ( is that a word?) If it had rained before I spotted the warning light on the dash it could have been very interesting indeed considering I was in north wales and enjoying some twisty tomfoolery!

If there's no obvious reason for the seal thave blown I would check, Crankcase breather is not blocked and that the Oil pressure relief valve is functioning properly. two possible causes of bown seals as opposed to worn out seals.

Thanks for the tip, I will take off the tupperware and get a closer look tomorrow evening and see whats happened.

So removed the fairing panels tonight, and then removed the plastic front cover and look what came out



I can't make out which seal has blown but the plastic seal cover is particularly soaked in oil



and my rear tyre is going to take some cleaning



and the eagle eyed amongst you will have spotted the nail in the tyre that was just there to pour salt on my wound
