Big Service R1100

Post by dazman »

Please treat me gentle this is my first post :)

Do R1100 need a big service at around 30-36k?

I ask because I was trawling completed listings on Ebay and there were alot of unsold ones with mileage around that ballpark.

So I wondered if there was something that puts purchasers off.

IF it's been done :?:  Condition on inspection is your best bet.

Mine came with a stamped service book (38K), and supposedly serviced by the dealer, but there is no way it'd been done going by the state of consumables and components.
Personally, having a butchers yourself and pretty much assuming/budgeting you'll have to do a big service on any bike after buying it is the safest way to go

PS I complained to the dealer and got reconditioned calipers, oil, plugs, filters etc for nowt, I declined their offer of a free second 'service'

Forget me if I am wrong but a big service woud be:

Oil / Filter
Gerabox and bevel box oil change
Air Filter
Spark plugs
Alternator belt
Valve clearnces
Pads if required.

If you can do the work yourself the parts are less than £100 or a little more with pads)
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity

I seem to recall the alternator belt being a recommended replacement at 36000 miles, although I know several who advocate not to bother as often it's still in good condition. If it failed it's either a call to the aa to get you home or continue riding on the available battery charge and change it at home

Nothing on this list is particularly difficult, and most of it I would want to do myself anyway on buying a second hand bike. If you get a deal because the service is not done yet, all well and good. Do it yourself and you know its been done properly.

Having come from a Multistrada, and a VERY active owners forum, by comparison there's really not a lot goes wrong with these bikes!!

My advice (as per others) is to buy based on condition then either do it yourself or get a service in after you've bought.

I'm in the process of doing oils, and may do vale clearances for piece of mind. It's all dead simple and the bike is (so far) lovely to work on.

So nothing out of the ordinary then. I'm quite handy with the tools ,the only things I've never done on my current GS is alternator belt and valve clearance. Don't beleive in paying someone else to to simple jobs.

Just the throttle bodies balance in addition to that list. And fuel filter every 36k I think - its a bitch of a job.
