Does BMW have any plans to make a new r1200s?
Hi,
Just wondered if anyone new if there were any plans for a new R1200s using the liquid cooled motor?

Why was it axed.
He reckoned that the problem was that no matter how focussed they made the flat twin engine, it would only ever be seen by hard core sports bike pilots as a touring bike due to being shaft driven.
Anyway, luckily we have our R11S and R 12s so we are happy

Personally, I think if the R1200S had been marketed as a sports tourer with proper pillion accomodation, it would have enjoyed far greater success.eyore wrote:and too hardcore for traditional BMW flat twin buyers .So its was never hugely viable as a model compared to the rest of the model lineup.
Let's be honest, great bike though it is, it'll never stay with the more hard core Ducati 999 of the same era, and in terms of performance, is more comparible to the Honda VFR800 which is no disgrace.
Far from it,
The VFR was on my list before buying the Beemer and I spent some time riding one,
A devastatingly effective bike it is too.
Just a little too, erm, Honda like (read that as bland), for my tastes,
As competition for the VFR, the R1200S would have been a great contender.
All the attributes of the VFR, but with a bit of soul and life.
A missed opportunity I reckon,

I am afraid it was (exceprt for the extra power) that's what the R1200ST was meant to be, a half way house sports tourer sitting in the range between the S and the RT, and they only made that for about 2 years.
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity
problem was though the ST has a um challenging appearance, although one that's growing on me, and that killed off a lot of buyers. Had they put the fairing from say the K12R-Sports (as per the recent photo I posted) on it then I honestly think it would have leapt out of the showrooms in comparison

No doubt about it if the sales brochure (which I have in front of me now), is anything to go by.
Here are a few quotes from that brochure
"Sport on the brain. Sport in the blood"
"Every second counts, But every millisecond counts more"
"122bhp of racing ambition"
Add to that, tips from Markus Barth on how to "get your lap times tumbling, plenty of knee down track action photo's and not a pillion passenger in sight, and it becomes clear that BMW marketed the R1200S as a pure sports bike.
At launch I thought about ordering and wanted to spec it with panniers--Sorry sir no hard luggage its a SPORTS bike. Only ordered after panniers became available and as everyone who has fitted them knows they always intended to provide panniers to fit. Not that it bothers me but the lack of decent seating for pillions cost them many sales imho.

Indeed, if you look at the first spy shots, you know, the ones from the petrol station with 2 bikes painted in mamola-esque colours, they both had pannier rails and the mushrooms fitted.herrman wrote:I ordered after panniers became available and as everyone who has fitted them knows they always intended to provide panniers to fit

That is exactly the process we went through .... passenger plus sufficient baggage was never going to happen on the R1200S. Needing a bike for the shorter rider ..... so we stayed with the R1100S.herrman wrote:At launch I thought about ordering and wanted to spec it with panniers--Sorry sir no hard luggage its a SPORTS bike. Our situation is obviously not sufficiently mainstream for there to be many options.
It has been a long route to finding our current ideal alternative solution, which thankfully does work.
But the R1100S deserves its ongoing place in the garage after such sterling service.
