'04 R1100S BoxerCup - recommended battery please!

Post by masha »

Gel or Lead acid - OEM or aftermarket? what is best currently and where to order from this week.

My 18 month old Varta cell failed on a ride Saturday and let me down (hoping that's all it is - as everything else checks out and it starts on a jump pack). - optimate tries to desulphate it for 6 hours and then fails to red-light

I had the OEM BMW cell before that (still in the shed) I topped up the levels and tried to recover that but no joy - need a new one.

Does anyone know the model of the Hein Gericke Gel batteries that fit the R1100S tray best? I guess I could mail order from there?

I don't think I'll buy Varta again - as I'd have expected an unbranded cell to last longer than 18 months - and its be regularly disconnected and Optimated over the winter.

Any advice, recommendations, suppliers appreciated.

Thanks MotoBatt does look good. I have heard Odyysey are the business too. - I will check for either of those locally perhaps.

Anyone know the model no. of either that best fits the R1100S, and any stockists in the South East?

A quick google found this one:
http://www.mad4bikes.co.uk/motobatt-mb5 ... y-600.html

Has anyone fitted one to an R1100S? - will this drop straight in?

I have odysseys in my KGT and my BCR, and a MotoBatt in my F650, the test I sent the link of details the guy stress testing them all. Of all the tests the motobatts ability to perform multiple starts of a 6.5 litre truck engine was I guess one of the more impressive. Heck if it'll start that then my 650 single's a doddle :) ... and it was half the price of the odyssey

I have always used Yuasa on my other bikes.

Relatively inexpensive and do the job.

That was an impressive test admitedly. Do you know which model of Motobatt you fitted to your R1100 BCR?

I have had Honda's that have run Yuasa's for literally over a decade well looked after out of season, so was pretty disappointed at the Varta's life (although I'm still hoping my BCR hasn't developed a rectifier or alternator fault, but when its running it returns a good steady 14v, so I'm hoping its fine, and it fires up fine off the power-jack on the side of the starter housing with a booster pack).

I have an odyssey on my BCR, I believe there's two fitments depending on whether you have abs/heated grips or not, mine doesn't but I'm not sure which I have as the previous owner fitted it ... and being honest I got it in 2008 I think so it's done a sterling job for the last 5 years at least.

The motobatt came with a 3/4 " removable plate on the bottom, and has duplicated terminal screws so can fit in a variety of bikes

Motorworks list the Odyssey PC680 for R1100S's (but "not for R1100S with small battery")

I guess a quick call to them would be best ?

You could always use the 'Search' function! Like soooooo many things its been done to death on many occassions!!

I just used and it took me less that minute to find out you need an Odyssey PC680 (assuming you have heated grips on your BCR).

If no HG then a PC 545 (smaller) battery is the one you need.

Of course I could be lying so check it out for yourself first

I've tried a couple of MotoBatt suppliers and both have said they don't stock anything for the R1100S, so I'm looking for a good lead on a mail order supplier of these today if anyone has any pointers either to the model of MotoBatt I need (for a non ABS '04 BoxerCupRep). or a mail order stockist that would know what I need.

use this site to get your part number/cross reference, then go shop on Ebay or whatever by part number rather than bike make.

Try busters of Swansea measure your battery give them the dimensions and hopefully they will have a look for you or will have a chart with the measurements on it

If they can't or won't help try M&P Swansea

The reason a battery won't be listed is your looking for a relatively rare old bike

Hope this helps Dai

Thanks for that - I went back to Walmer Batteries in Kent where I got my Varta 2 years ago, along with two others for my Honda twins at the time, all for £45ea. The same cell now is £75 - but I wasn't buying another Varta after it let me down so suddenly last weekend after 23 months careful use. They confirmed warrantee is only 1 year on most bike batteries, and I went for a 22aH Lucas sealed lead acid cell (exactly the right dimensions they recommended to get me back on the road this weekend (technically a golf buggy cell, but a good reputation and he;s sold at least 10 to BMW owners in the last couple of years and not had one back). I will look into the MotoBat units, as I need to order some other cells for my scooter and Ducati in the next few weeks and I'll try to get a batch of them, and continue to look into the correct model for the R1100S then. The Duc. is a pain as its the MH900E - it has twin-batteries: so two to replace on that. Its going to be an expensive summer of batteries, and I've just bought one for the Caterham too (they even make a tiny LIthium cell for these now, but its £280! so I stuck with the £60 standard Banner unit now they've up'ed the Ampage a bit on the new ones for improved cranking)
