Voltage Regulators

Post by Al »

A general question about voltage regulators, are they all the same ie if the plug/pins are the same will a Yamaha one do the same job on a Honda or in my case MZ(yamaha 660 motor is fitted in my Baghira), any info greatfully recieved as I am only getting 11 volts into (new) battery when engine is running. I can build jet engines blindfolded but I am a bit limited in electrical ability.

The wires will generally be the same, the plugs may not. There may be an extra small voltage sensing wire.

11V is awfully low.

I think its electrex have a big troubleshooting flow chart you can follow.

Electrex will respond quickly to any emails / photos of items.

I'm told mosfet types are the best though

Thanks Nigel, I found the troubleshooting chart, I think even I can follow it. Had a quick trawl through the units, mine has 6 wires tho` and does not seem to match up to any on the site, I will do the fault finding and see what it points to and take it from there.

From memory.

You should have...

3 thick wires from the Alternator.

2 Thick wires to fusebox. Red and Green?

The 6th wire is a switched live voltage sensor, should be a lot thinner than the rest.

Can you take some pics?

After having a chat to several people I bit the bullet and ordered a new one from the MZ dealer in Taunton, £65 about 10 quid more than electrex but I know the one I get will be ok.

Plug and play wins every time.

Make sure the contacts are nice and clean.
