Abba Stands - 04 bikes onwards

I'm looking at getting an Abba stand but was planning on sharing it with a mate. I've got an 03 and he has an 04, but the site suggests the 04 onwards models have a different stand so they can't be shared.

Does anyone know the difference between these? I had a search but couldn't find anything.

they can be shared as far as I know - the abba stand for the 04 BCR is only different in that it is higher for the increased height of the BCR. It would lift the earlier bike higher and according to the abba guy I spoke to at the NEC would be harder to lift but it could be used

Hello,

Not sure this is relevant but I had an ABBA stand that was specific to my BMW K1300S. Looked the same..

When the K1300S Was stolen I kept the stand but if remember right when I used it on the R1200S it raised it far too high....or was it too low?

Luckily for me I swapped it with someone who had the standard stand and wanted a K1300S suitable stand - Happy days.

I stand to be corrected but I think there is a standard one and then a specific one for the BMW K1200S/R, K1300S/r and maybe others using similar frame and engine combos.

Probably best to discuss with ABBA - I have always found them very helpful

We both have Ohlins on the bikes, so roughly both the same height.

Hmm... Abba said it won't work because of the suspension height. Er-minio's bike is as high as the Ohlins will go (he's a big chap) whereas mine is stock, (non-sport) height so it's probably as big a difference as you could imagine.

Don't they use the swing arm pivot?
If so just measure the height of the swinging arm pivot point on both bike's
It looks like it will lift a bike a good few inches so if the pivot points are within an inch or two i can't see a problem
If there's a problem you can always use a piece of wood under the abba stand when you use it on the taller bike

Remember that the manufacturers will want to sell you two stands Dai

That's what I'm thinking Dai. Or the other way round (get the taller stand and put some blocks under the wheels to raise them up).

I had the same worry when asking them directly that they'd be inclined to want a second stand sale.

I remember now...

...The stand I had for the K1300S had the height of the pins set quite low which was fine for that one.

As I said earlier I swapped it for a standard ABBA stand as when I used the K1300S stand on my R1200S I had to put wood underneath it to get any useable height out of it.

Due to the way these stands work not only would you have to put wood under the main "crossbar" of the stand but also under the legs that support it when raised. Otherwise the stand is going to be sloping more than it should and a shove from the rear on the bike may cause it to slip off the wood under the crossbar with possible problems. Does that make sense??

One solution then would be to create some blocks - 1 to go under the crossbar and 2 to go under the feet which you could attach permanantly perhaps? Tie wraps?

Yep that makes a lot of sense, thanks again. I was thinking a sheet of wood thick enough to be the right height, and big enough to cover the whole area under the stand would be right. As I said, the alternative is a couple of sheets to raise the wheels up on the shorter S.

We're going to measure the difference in height between the bikes and if it's not more than an inch or two probably go for one.

shame you're not closer, you could have tried mine. The Boxerdesign one I have from Motorworks is also good but I do have to put that on wood to get the wheels off the ground - why have I got two stands you ask? the Boxerdesign stand gets used on my bike ramp and I bought the abba cos I was getting sick of kicking bits off wood under the stand

Just as a follow up to this, I spoke to Abba stands and they reckoned either would work with wood under the stand or the wheels depending on which version we went for.

We went for the taller stand and wood under the wheels of the older S and it worked fine! It felt extremely stable and worked great for both bikes.
