Problems changing gear.

Hi,

A couple of weeks ago I started off on my bike and found I couldn't get beyond second gear. I stopped, gave the shifter a waggle and that cured the problem.

The same problem occurred a few days ago, I used the same fix but found I could change up but not back down again. Now I'm having the problem every ride I can usually get it working but have to stop and waggle the shifter every few miles.

I've just read the linkage can become stiff, I'll check it tomorrow but it seems to be moving freely, the oil is at the correct level.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Jon

It'll be the linkage - it's very common on the GS. I found on the GS the ball joints weren't the cuplrit but actually where it pivots on the frame / footpeg mount. I know it's a slightly different setups between the two bikes but might help!

If it's just in need of some lubrication chain lube is your best friend also use it for anything that pivots except front brake and clutch levers (it will clog up the micro switches)
Hope this helps Dai

Hi,

Never straight forward is it!

I have taken the gear shift linkage off today.

The first ball joint was completely seized.

Unfortunately It was so rusty I destroyed it removing it from the ball stud.

I've just ordered a used replacement linkage (from an F800) which includes ball studs and sockets from ebay for £8.

Thought I'd give the whole mechanisim the once over while I was at it. Both circlips that hold in the shifter bearings are broken, I hope to be able to source replacements locally.

I'll need to sponge a lift into work tonight and tomorrow now.

I pretty sure this linkage is the problem so I suppose I should be pleased its nothing more serious!

Thanks for the help.

Keep the new one lubed up to avoid problems in the future

Will do,

Looks like the bearings (608-2RS) are commonly used in skateboards, on ebay for about a £1 each, mine feel a bitty gritty so I've ordered a couple of those as well.
