1200S - Hilltop Remap

Post by DaveH »

Finally got round to taking the 12S to Hilltop for a remap.
Results are well impressive....initial reactions were a bit of disappointment as the hard 'hit' at 5.5K had completely gone.. but then I got chance to try the roll on power - feck me it goes like a rocket.
Final figures were around 122 bhp at the rear wheel (123.48 on the all gear run) and 86 ft/lb torque. (Max torque figure through the gears was 156.2 ft/lb ...!!)

Who needs an Hp2 Sport....
(well me actually, but I'll just have to continue drinking rainwater and eating grass till I can afford one)

Really nice block paving, is it 'Brindle'

Seriously though, can they re-map any bike with a erm, map. Those are quite impressive figures. (Nice bike BTW).

Good outcome Dave, impressive figures.

I love the paint job on your 12s, did you have it done? :D

Hi
I take it the guy used a rexer tuning remap software?
Did you have a dyno run done before to compare what the remap did?
Also what exhaust system are you running?
All the best

No, bought it in April this year after sellig my Benelli Tornado.

Story goes that it was painted by BMW as a 'show' bike. Spent most of its early life being flitted between BMW dealerships with little or no mileage.

Its only done 6.5K now.

Hilltop do not use any aftermarket add ons for tuning.
As far as I am aware it is the only place in the UK and quite possibly worldwide where this facility exists.
Geoff has written his own computer program which enables him to access deep into the ECU (a level deeper than the diagnostics etc). He is then able to reflash the ECU with his own firmware upgrade that enables him to remap the unit with his own bespoke mapping system.

His system is multi map and he descrbibes it as a 'carousel' of data - 5 individual maps which rotate on the fly depending on the input from the various sensors on the engine. This depends on temperature, barometric pressure, throttle position, speed of throttle opening etc. and pulls data from whichever map is required. This gives optimum performance vs economy. My bike is actually returning over 50mpg at the moment despite the performance hike !!

Before figures were 104.58 rwhp and 72.31 ft lb torque.

I am running a full Akrapovic system ie, headers, decat pipe and silencer.

A long thread on another forum but worth having a scan through it. Positive results and I would definitely like to get my 1200GSA done.

Was the 104.58 figure with the Akra system fitted?

104 seems way low even for a standard engine/exhaust. BMW claim 122 bhp (i assume not at the wheel) for the standard bike so 104 at the heel seems ever so low. No wonder you have noticed a big difference with the jump upto 122

BMW claim 132 for the HP2 in standard trim. A guy on pelican posted dyno figures for his bike in standard trim and that showed 118 at the wheel which I guess is about right based on 132 figure. Hence why your original 104 fugure seems a bit low.

I have seen curves at the rear wheel for standard 1200s' and they seem to be between 102 and 104HP. So nearly 105 with an Akra is in the ballpark.

The figure itself is somewhat irrelevant as every dyno will give a different result and conditions on the day will have an effect, even with the same bike on the same dyno. What is important is the relative improvement.

I am giving consideration to having this done and have read the threads on UKGSER and there are some comments that the Hilltop dyno typically shows a lower figure than other dynos.

Standard 1200s with a good ecu puts out 122-126 bhp at the crank. There has been known for bikes with a bad ecu/ poor maps putting out 116-118bhp at the crank. I would factor in anywhere between 7-10 bhp loss through the drive train to the rear wheel.
Your base run seems very low . Although as has been pointed out already ,dynos differ in readings. From 104 to 122 seems a very very big hike just from a ecu rewrite. The final figure is somewhere I would expect your bike to be with the akrapovic exhaust. Mine with the same exhaust and a piper cross filter,pc 3 gave 119bhp at the wheel on BSD,s dyno.
How much did it cost?
There is a German guy who also does ecu modifications along with some other good tuning products.

How much is it to get this sort of work done? I'd like to get my 11S done at some point, partly to see what its putting out with the k&n + vandelinde chip and exhaust and partly to get rid of the snatchiness and flat spots.

£360 or £350 for UKGSER member. That is the full treatment.

Forgive my ignorance, but would what Hilltop could do with my 11S do away with the need for a PCIII to optimise fuelling? Presumably a 12S is a lot more sophistomacated and play-around-with-able? (he sed in his bestest Inglish)

Spent most of the afternoon reading the stuff on the GS forum (and got little else done  ). It seem that there is some cinicism towards this type of tuning on that site, with even some suggesting skullduggery with the dyno figures. Regardless of figures, the concensus of opinion from those that have had it done is that it makes the bikes much nicer to ride, and that 'mass opinion' is surely worthy of note. It is also clear that this can be done to completely standard bikes without the need for any other add ons such as PC or Techlusion and is all done through the bikes original ECU.

Group buy anyone :D
