Too good to be true?

Post by R-man »

Spotted this cheap M/c satNav unit - http://amzn.to/YzxeIl on Amazon UK.

I can't run to the spon needed to buy a Zumo 660 etc, or even a TT Rider, so this might be attractive. Anyone here know more about its origins, or the suggestion that it will work with only some Bluetooth headsets?

The unit may be fine, but first thing Id ask is does it actually come with any maps on it. There is no mention of what mapping software etc which seems a bit odd.

Looking at the reviews it comes from china but it is supplied with maps there seems to be some confusion wether it's updatable or not as it's apparently not supported on the manufacturers web site
Would a second hand garmin be a better bet?

Haha! I have one of these.

Maps work bang on. It got me part of the way across europe before running out of battery. Europe is covered, and everywhere I went in germany it was at my side just in case. For the price, it was much better than using a phone for example.

It is waterproof, It is sturdy - and it does its job pretty well. Secures into the mount by use of a screw on the back - supplied with a screwdriver/pointstick jobby.

it plays back movies and music - which I found nice when stopping in a german hotel room with no english telly. Just stored some episodes of my favourite shows on there.

However.

Battery life not that good. 2 - 2.5 hrs?

I have mine mounted on the tank with one of these -

I have to admit I was bought this as a christmas present, otherwise I would probably never have given it a second glance. but its done the job fine so far, providing you give it a good charge it sees out most journeys.

Big problem though I found was in mounting the charging lead down to the battery (fag lighter charger is for a car not the BMW socket), I had it under the tank plastics and the way this bike shakes like a shitting dog it had smashed up the inline resistor within a month. Bear that in mind and route it appropriately or get someone like Towza(tronics) to make you one up that will go straight down to the external charging socket - if you have one.
Bring on the Pipe and Slippers.
