My rails are faded and worn looking, I'd like to freshen them up before putting on my new bike. I don't think bumper restorer or back to black will be a lasting option so I am thinking some plastic paint?

Anyone done this, did it work? Any other ideas I may have missed short of forking out for some new rails (which would be wasteful as these are fine just dowdy with age)

I back to black mine about every three months, and the panniers, and any other black plastic bits on the bike, eg indicators front & rear, instrument panel etc etc

Always looks fresh

Very do-able. de grease, fine grit paper, black spray and lacquer if you must. No need to prime as said previously. Do the metal supports as well, primer may be needed there. No point poncing with panniers as they only roll around on floor anyway

I've never done pannier rails, but sprayed up a pair of 1100S cylinder head guards and they came up like new.

Fine sand and then spray with several thin coats of Satin Black as mentioned by others

Would this work for mirror stems mine are starting to bubble a little bit around the joints.

You will need to prime them

Personaly i would not rub down pannier rails as they have a fairly rough finish on them
